I was looking to book a hotel night for December with my Marriott Bonvoy Amex and wanted to get as close to the £250 that triggers the statement credit, but the hotel I am looking at has nothing above that amount for a night. If I make a purchase (like room service) that then takes the total spend over £250, would that trigger the bonus? Or does it have to be just on the overnight price? Another way, would this count as two separate transactions, and thus require a ‘cumulative spend’ on the promotion to work?
Anything that’s charged to your room and appears on the final bill should trigger the cashback. Are there no packages which would take it to £250, usually there are all sorts of deals with things like dinner/parking/spa facilities at Marriott hotels.
Also if you have the offer on any other cards, a few of them have currently got £50 off £200.
Great, I just had a problem with Hyatt where they charged me at check out for two rooms, separately, and then a small minibar tab would would have taken the total to above the specific amex threshold, and it was an offer that was not ‘cumulative spend’ and they didn’t accept it as a single charge.
And yes, 50 on 200 is something but 100 on 250 is better!
I’m still gutted that I missed out on a £100 IHG credit because I was £75 short cumulative spend. This was the luxury hotels one.
Had I known how my plans for the next 2 months would fall, I would have poured £75 of minibar booze down the sink on what ended up being my final stay in the period and pocketed the £25 profit!
I am sure I have seen elsewhere – it says in T&Cs about qualifying spend posted in UK£, but for European hotels in the list – that won’t happen. Is credit still awarded if charged to card at hotel in € (obviously for equivalent >£250 – allowing for conversion surcharge as well).
I was about to book two hotel nights in South Africa to take advantage of both Marriott an Hilton Amex statement credit deals – but then I noticed they’re only valid at participating locations. Is this actually enforced? Is hotel location recorded in the transaction details?

Yes it is GBP equivalent 250 not actual GBP

Yes. Amex knows the ID codes of the payment account for that hotel and matches against it.
This sometimes works in your favour (the Costa on Kensington High St counts as Hilton spend) and against you (eg if you pay an independently run hotel restaurant direct and not charging to a room).

But what if I book the hotel through Marriott/Hilton website with full pre-payment – presumably then it’s not the individual hotel that charges me?
(not denying that those offers are really location specific, just curious how it works!)
I have always assumed that the pre-payments are processed by the individual hotels, so far it has been the case for me with Marriott.
In some occasions, I have been asked for a credit card at check-in as well, even with pre-payment rates. This has been true for both Marriott and IHG for me.
The offer say valid at checkout spend only. Does this mean that if i book a prepaid room, the offer will not be triggered?
Amex are ahead of themselves today. I made a Marriot Homes and Villas transaction and a Hilton one on Monday (both in euro).
Just now (Thurs) received confirmation emails that the offers tracked. But neither is even showing in pending on my Amex account yet.
Interestingly and thankfully even though the M says pay and ‘stay’ before 30/10 it has triggered for a stay which begins after that date.
Is it possible to buy gift cards to trigger the credit? Specifically, thinking Marriott?
Tracy, tried that when l called up one time. Got to be pay on departure. We are still waiting for a £75 credit from a night on 30th July. Now we’ll over 90 days, so much ph or chat.
Davefl. We have a M home and villas booking in Nov before we head from kul to HKG, if it ever happens. Wonder what happens if we end up not staying due to flight changes etc. ie having to leave for HKG before we even get to the stay. It’s in kul for 3n, that offer they had a while ago get a bonus of 10k points. Our stay may well not happen. Would we still get the points, l wonder. Ideas?
@polly, thought that would be the case 🙁
Good luck with chasing Amex 😂
Mine’s not pay on departure. I’ve paid in full at time of booking because it was less than 30 days before arrival. But the stay is after the amex promo ends. No refund possible. If it’s pay on departure after 30/11 you’re not going to get anything.
