I’m currently BA silver and have been for a decade. However, this year with two small kids etc we will not be maintaining status for the first time in a long time. Now with the BA changes coming I’ve decided not to even bother as no way we’ll be making stays I again. I’ve already switched over to Amex platinum and planning to cancel my BA amex plus taken out a Virgin card as well as I’ve been unhappy with BA for a long time regardless.
Anyway, in light of the above I want to avail of current status matches available with flying blue and maybe Lufthansa too. But struggling to understand how I should time this as we are already booked for our annual holidays this year (all with British, made before the changes happened) as I’d like to time it so we can actually take advantage of the status with other airlines, knowing we’re not planning any more flights this year other than what’s already booked.
So the question is, do I request status match now? Or given that my silver card says it’s valid until end of June, should I wait until mid June to request a status match (with the risk that current status matches might close, but I’m willing to take the risk because it’s unlikely we’ll get to take advantage of status until next year anyway). Trying to determine the best approach to take here.
When would your first Sky Team or Star Alliance flight be?

Nothing planned as yet, as we haven’t started discussing our holiday plans for next year…
Many on this forum seem to be betting there will be another round of LH/AFKL status matches in spring 2026 when a significant amount will expire without renewal/downgrade. I wouldn’t 100% count on all options being on the table.
If I were in your shoes I’d strategically pick the one you are most likely to start earning on, keeping the other in your back pocket as a bet it will still be available and extend some kind of decent status beyond 2026.

I see what you’re saying but there current earning year ends at the end of this month and I haven’t made silver so come 1st April I will be downgraded already. So the question is given my BA silver card expires end of June do I wait for June to status match with other airlines or do I need to do it by the end of march?
Ben Lipsey who runs Flying Blue told me they currently intend to run it again. Doesn’t mean they will but that’s the current scenario.
I’d need to listen to it again but he may even have said it publicly on the podcast we did together.

Hi Rob, but given the actual card expires end of June does that mean I have until then to request a status match (if one is available in June) or given I haven’t made status and the year ends in 11 days I should request it now?
