Forums Payment cards American Express Supplementary card payment query

  • 45 posts

    Hi all

I’ve got a supplemtary plat card so the missus can reach the target for a bonus, question is can I pay the card off from my bank account, or would Amex want it from her only?

You can only make payments via the main card holder’s account so you should be fine.

I’m a supplementary cardholder on my boyfriend’s AMEX. When I want to make a payment I do a BACS transfer from my account, no problem.

I’ve just realised what I wrote earlier! Yes anyone can make a payment to a particular card, but it has to be to the main cardholder’s account, i.e. you can’t log into your own account as a supp holder and pay it from there.

Actually, Amex are getting a bit stroppy.

I often pay Mrs Mac’s cards from my account – we like to pay off all our cards the day before a month-long trip, while she checks the essentials in the packing. Since we have a power of attorney over each other, we both have access to each other’s bank accounts and since we are in business together, we both have access to the business accounts.

So, in my mind, it doesn’t matter who the cash comes from.

But now, Amex is getting shirty!

We had a refund on a one of Mrs Mack’s closed Amex cards. To get the funds back, Amex wanted proof of her bank account. We posted that off (Amex can’t let you upload if the account is closed!).

Then they got back and asked: where did that £5,000 payment on xx/xx/xxxx come from? So I had to send them Mrs Mack’s account for that day showing a transfer of a bit more than that to me, and my bank account showing the payment to Amex, and two other card companies the same day!

So now – if you have PoAs! – transfer the cash to the appropriate bank account first, and then send it from there to Amex.

Gone are the days when, even as a supp, you could set up a DD from your account and not the main cardholders. Just as well our cat has never had any accounts!

I closed my account. As I had 12 months of Amex removing or getting stroppy about stuff that was always fine for 20 years

This will get worse. Trust me

@ColinMacKinnon – you can do these things without issue as long as you notify Amex in advance, which you only need to do once. For some years I have paid off Amex cards for various people and my wife and children pay into my Amex accounts.
