Hi all,
I’ve redeemed an average of 54k points per night for the intercontinental hotel in Phuket. It states 10% service charge will be due on top, this info is stated when I select the room. I’ve emailed the hotel who have been helpful on other questions but struggling to answer this. On what basis will this 10% be charged? The value of the points redeemed? The list price for the room? The cash price as of today when I booked? I’ll pay on check out but don’t want a nasty shock.
I’m also now concerned to see another tax of 8.7% mentioned if I go into the booking I’ve made. I’m struggling to find where I saw this now but couldn’t see this when making the booking.
Can anyone else who has redeemed in Thailand/Phuket or this specific hotel share their experience if it was paid for in points? How do they calculate the 10% and is there also another 8.7% fee?
I’ve redeemed at several IHG hotels in Thailand (although not Intercontinental). All of them seem to have taxes and a 10% service charge if booking with cash. I redeemed fully in points and none of them charged me anything extra.
I’ve never been billed for a service charge on a redemption. Unlike resort fees!
Thanks. Technically I can’t understand how they can charge service and tax on points but their emails (albeit confused) don’t clarify. If I’m going to Gr charged 10% service and 8.7% tax (on god knows what ratecard price) it doesn’t make the redemption attractive, even with 100% bonus on points it ends up being almost the same as the full cash price especially with breakfast costing £25 per person per night.

neither have I, but I’ve not seen anywhere mention a ‘10% service charge’ on hotel stays before like Thailand. And the tax is usually included in the price. I seriously hope I don’t get charged but will see what they say once replying, now the booking is in their system.

You won’t be charged. As I said, I’ve made several IHG booking this year and none of them charged anything extra.
For example, at the bottom of my email booking confirmation for one of my points bookings it says:
Tax and Fee Details
10% per night not included in rate effective 15 April, 2023 thru 17 April, 2023
7.7% per night not included in rate effective 15 April, 2023 thru 17 April, 2023
Nothing extra was charged.
Great, thank you. I’ll have to put up a fight if they try to.
