Forums Payment cards American Express Thinking about American Express Platinum

I’m currently a supplementary card holder holder of BAPP card and previously was a main card holder of BAPP 14 months ago. If I apply for plat card do I get the SUB? The Amex t&Cs say not as ive held a personal card in the 24 months, but Robs post suggestions yes.

And if I reply, will I reset the 24 month clock on my BAPP card application?

Yes, you do receive the SUB.

I already held the BAPP and when I signed up for the Platinum last year, I received the SUB.

I believe the way to think of this is that if you’ve never held a Membership Rewards points earning Amex before in the timeframe of eligibility, you are good. BAPP earn Avios, not MR points.

The rules are pretty complicated but as Rob’s articles explain that you are eligible for a Plat SUB if you haven’t had an MR card in the past 24 months – holding a BAPP doesn’t affect this. It would prevent you from getting the gold SUB, though, which is where the confusion might come in.

Rob’s article does make this clear:

Can I get the sign-up bonus if I have a British Airways American Express card?

Yes. The rule is that you will not receive a sign-up bonus if you have held a Platinum, Gold or Green American Express charge card, or the Amex Rewards credit card, in the 24 months before you apply.

You WILL receive the sign-up bonus if you have a Corporate or Business American Express Green, Gold or Platinum card via your job and you receive Membership Rewards points from it. This is a recent change to the rules. Only PERSONAL cards impact on whether you qualify.

For clarity, you will definitely receive the sign-up bonus on The Platinum Card if you already have a BA Amex, Nectar Amex, Marriott Bonvoy Amex or Platinum Cashback Amex.

You will also definitely receive the bonus if you are currently a supplementary cardholder on someone else’s Amex Gold or Platinum card. As far as Amex is concerned, that card belongs to the primary cardholder and does not make you an ‘existing cardholder’.

@Kiley, PS – this also won’t reset your BAPP clock, as like the Platinum the BAPP eligibility only cares about your history in that points “currency”. So having a MR card does nothing regarding your clock on the BAPP Avois card.

Is it just a points currency thing though? I currently hold Green and a BA Amex, and doesn’t holding Green prevent me from receiving any sign up bonuses in other currencies such as with the Nectar Amex, Marriott Bonvoy Amex and Platinum Cashback Amex?

Different ways of looking at it.
BAPP and Plat card – points currency is relevant.
For all other cards, holding any personal Amex card will rule out bonuses.

Took me ages to figure it out, I still find myself going to Robs article on it which is EXPLICITLY clear.

When I was applying for the Platinum Card this was the wording on the application page (I think the biz version) :

I understand I will not be eligible for any Welcome Bonus award if I hold or have held any personal Membership Rewards-enrolled American Express Cards in the past 24 months. I have held a Green card for years but it was not MR enrolled.

Does this also apply to personal Platinum cards as they have not credited the bonus which I should have received based on the above?
