Booked DUB-HEL-JFK (AY), JFK-LHR——LCY-DUB (BA) for €490 for travel 22 Nov. This morning, BA email saying “ We’ve had to change your cabin on your upcoming BA6051 flight to New York J F Kennedy on Wednesday 22 November 2023. We can offer you a seat in .

We’re sorry that you’re not able to travel in your original cabin, however we’ll do everything we can to make things right.”

I had to log into MMB to see what the change is due to the omission in the email. The AY HEL-JFK leg downgraded to economy with an apology message that the original cabin (J) is full. A dummy booking shows that to be far fron the case.

I’m not sure if I’ll push this or just take a refund. I booked it merely as a punt and I am not keen on a war of attrition between now and November with regular ‘full’ J cabins seeing me having to fight against further downgrades.

What are the cancellation options for these bookings (I don’t know if just being downgraded counts)?. Otherwise, fly, claim downgrade compo and get a very cheap Y flight? And possibly original cabin credit in terms of avios and TPs? I don’t know why BA has actually done this – they are landing themselves with a much bigger bill than just claiming these were error fares and won’t even retain a great deal of goodwill by chucking everyone out of their J seats.

No automatic refund eligibility for a downgrade, which I do think is a lacuna in 261 rights. I wouldn’t fly HEL-JFK in Y so I’ll just take a refund within 24hrs of booking if I’n being quoted a fare difference for alternative routes.

No fare difference, website offered me the full gamut of OW Joint venture flights for that day so switched to DUB-LHR-JFK on a BA/AA mix. New booking screenshotted for records – all in J. Let’s see if an updated confirmation email arrives.

There was quite a lot of talk on FT about this issue I think? From what I recall it’s a glitch. Maybe head over and have a look? I might be wrong of course.

Yes I recall that this is a long-standing issue with Finnair bookings.
