Transit AMS – anyone had any experiences lately of the queues when transitting schengen to non schengen?
Klm got some great fares uk – europe but putting me off after hearing some horror stories. Thank you
When did these “horror stories” happen?
Because this year has been much improved over last year for example.
After a nightmare trip a couple of years back when I was stranded.in AMS for 36 hours and spent about 8 hours queuing to speak to KLM, I will never again transit in AMS with KLM.
AMS is also the only place where I’ve been bumped off a flight due to overbooking. It’s happened twice to me, and the airline made no effort to find volunteers.
Once bitten, twice shy.
Depends on what time you are passing through the passport lines to transfer between Schengen and Non-Schengen, or vice versa. First wave in the morning can be really busy and up to one hour, with regular calls for people to move forwards within 45 minutes of departure on a moving basis. Other waves in late afternoon can be busy as well with people heading for the late long hauls as well.
Outside those times, it tends to be pretty empty on both sides for the transit through passport. Also, if it is Schengen to Non-Schengen you may be pulled for a further security check, though its is a random check. Liquids are fine at this stage.

The AIRPORT didn’t do that the airline did.

That’s why I said that I will never again transit in AMS with KLM. The OP is looking at good deals with KLM that require an AMS transit, so my experience is pertinent.
Most recent transfer from Schengen to non-Schengen (flying back to UK); around lunchtime. Queue of about 5 people; through in 2 minutes.
AMS/KLM wouldn’t put me off at all, but I don’t want the stress in my life of cutting-it-fine transfer times and don’t need to save time that intensely so wouldn’t book anything particularly risky in the first place (there or anywhere else).
Why transfer in the Shxthole Schiphol? The toilets are stinky, and indeed the queue times are highly unpredictable to say the least. Things are cheap for a reason
Never had any issues getting through, but one piece of advice I will give. If you do leave yourself extra time between flights to transfer, stay well away from that Carlsberg Lounge… awful place, total and utter waste of a lounge pass!
My wife had a 40 minute transfer in AMS when doing HEL-AMS-DUB on KLM. She made it to DUB, the bag didn’t. It was delayed in AMS.
She was reunited with the bag about 17 hours later despite there being two later flights same day. The bag had an overnight in AMS.
