Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

Forums Frequent flyer programs British Airways Club Travel insurance – cover for Avios points

  • 4 posts

Can anyone help with recommendations to “insure” Avios points from trip cancellation. Just looking for a new holiday/travel insurance policy and many companies exclude points, timeshare and holiday property bond.
For example we will not cover “compensation for any air miles, cruise miles or holiday points used to pay for the trip in part or in full”.

I’m sure there are plenty of others as well, but Nationwide FlexPlus explicitly covers points/Avios.

Thanks for the heads up on Nationwide FlexPlus.

The Natwest packaged account (platinum) also covers points

Amex Platinum also covers Avios, as long as you pay the surcharge with an Amex card.

How does amex compensate for the lost avios? I mean, what is the rate used for each avios?

    Thanks for all the replies.

I would have thought avios lost in an insurable event would be reclaimable at their regular purchase price which istr is 1.6p. Some policies do have text specifically excluding avios and points schemes coverage but otherwise I’d claim either replacement cost of avios within my claim or replacement cost of what I’d booked.

Would you need travel insurance for cancelling a BA rewards flight booked with Avios, given that you can cancel your trip up to 24 hours before departure and get all the Avios and taxes back (though would have to pay £35 pp fee I think)? Would insurance only be needed if you were to cancel within 24 hours of departure?

@FH2 – in theory yes. But insurance must be live at the time of booking – you can’t retrospectively buy it when there’s a problem!

IMHO you’d have to be an idiot to travel without insurance. Ever bought a full-fare economy (Y) ticket?? Ask someone to Kick you in the nether-regions for an idea of how that feels 😉

You’d also need cover if you have to cancel the return leg or move it to another date?

yes, but in these circumstances I can imagine one would just book a cash flight, and claim that, if the original booking was in miles.

cover for the very narrow possibility you have a sudden illness in the 23h59m before first departure is optional in my book, and I’m a stickler for traveling with insurance. everything else can be rearranged with cash more easily, surely? or am I missing something?

It would be great if HfP (or someone) did a guide to ‘how to make a comprehensive claim’ or ‘what you’re covered for’ in various scenarios. I’m sure most scenarios can be captured in 4 or 5 set examples or case studies.

Unfortunately, there are dozens of scenarios and actually it’s very important/advantageous when making an insurance claim or 261 not to follow some template. It’s really just down to common sense to list each type of loss, provide evidence thereof and tie that to the insurance policy or 261. If you provide an individualised claim clearly set out and documented, your claim will proceed smoothly.

You need to read the new policy to understand what this actually means. The reality is much better than the headline.

The Virgin Money Club M account covers the lowest cash equivalent of airmiles and it’s only £12.50/month with breakdown and gadget cover. But wonder if airmiles cover will eventually disappear some time after the Nationwide takeover (if it goes through).

Natwest and Lloyds also cover but more expensive.

NatWest platinum account isn’t too expensive. £15 per month after rewards.
