Forums Frequent flyer programs The British Airways Club Travelling to OZ using avios

  • 92 posts

    Hi

Me and the other half wish to travel to oz in Jan 2025 using avois and would like to travel business class return

We currently have 400k avios (not likely to go up by much in a year )and also a 2-4-1 voucher would like to fly straight through either on BA , QR or QF

Do we have enough points to do this in business class (I know the voucher can only be used on BA)

What’s the chances of getting 2 reward seats in Jan 2025 , what’s the best tactics to get the seats

    Advice appreciated

Have a look at the 241 threads on here where there is a lot of info about how to bag avios seats generally and also to SYD specifically.

SeatSpy will help to a certain extent with BA availability and will also tell you how many avios you’ll need.

This is a good one; I know it’s long but if you’re new to this you need to do a fair bit of research to be able to get the best use of your 241 voucher. Rob & co have also written a series of articles about avios, the voucher, and the best ways to maximise their value.

If you can find 180k Qatar flights for then this would be perfect. Not that much difference in pricing even with the 2-for-1. Not the easiest thing to find, but if you are prepared to travel to anywhere in Australia from anywhere in Europe then that tilts the odds are in your favour.

I am thinking a similar thing as the OP.

Are there any searches that are useful for finding the ‘right’ Qatar flights? I tried and the availability calendar said there were flights at 180k but then you click through, they’re all Q2 so twice the rate.

I guess I might have been lucky, however, after linking my BA and Qatar accounts, found economy to Melbourne out on the 11/1/24 and business back on the 21/1/24 travelling on Qatar. Booked on the 31/1/23. Cost of 135k Avios plus around £440

I’m going to say that your best bet on getting availability is by using your companion voucher from the regions on BA.

January will be popular but the voucher opens things up significantly, in fact a quick check for Jan ‘24 shows some availability on Jan 1st outbound then nothing until the 19th but the back end of the month into Feb has reward flights on around 2 out of 3 days. Returns have similar results in Feb.

The economics are another matter but the coverage of Qatar redemptions have reduced the availability, if you can find them go for it (and that’s what I’m doing in Feb).

Interesting that BA have severely cut back on reward seats for all OW partners, in favour of their own EC members. This may or may not, open up a few more seats to Aus as this is an incredibly popular route for both markets.
My son has come on overnight to say that talking to Qantas for a J class redemption to London on BA and back would now be extremely difficult, especially for two seats.

I booked Melbourne using Qatar for 180k Avios for late Jan 2024 in Feb 2023 via BA’s site. You need to carefully watch as they load to Qatar first then only available on BA a few days later. They also didn’t seem to have all the seats Qatar did. There’s a thread which has this info
