    Hoping someone can help my friend who was bumped from the IST – NEVSEHIR flight last night. Just told they could not fly with no explanation, left in the airport all night. Not offered food or hotel or anything. Both women in their late sixties. Turkish airlines booked them onto a flight at 7am.
    Is this normal? Can they do something about this and if so, what sort of compensation could they get and how? Thank you so much.

    I’m afraid your friends are reliant on Turkish law and airline policies so I wouldn’t count on any sort of compensation.

    Did they not try and book themselves a hotel? Travel insurance might have covered the cost of that but even if not it would have been more comfortable than the airport?

    How did they get to IST in the first place? Were they in IST waiting to catch the connecting flight having left from the UK on Turkish on one PNR? If so then they may be entitled to compensation via EC261. This assumes they did not break the journey in IST or got there on a separate ticket. The problem is even if they are entitled to compensation getting Turkish to pay is another thing altogether.

    They should have booked themselves into a hotel at the airport last night and then potentially claimed off their travel insurance (assuming they have that). They may still be able to claim for the delayed arrival.

    Good points – by the time they found out, after delays anyway, it was quite late. They just decided to stay there as they had to be back again at 0530.
    They’re from Australia and not the most confident of travellers.
