Forums Payment cards Other payment cards UK credit card use in Gibraltar – do you pay FX fees?

Off to Gibraltar soon for the first time and wondering whether we can use all of our normal UK credit cards without fees or whether we need to switch to using our Halifax clarity or Curve (as we normally would when abroad)?

UK cards work fine with no fees. I did find not everywhere accepts amex.

I’ve definitely been stung with foreign transaction fees before in Gibraltar. Think it was HSBC WE.

The Gibraltar Pound has a different currency code GIP to U.K. Sterling GBP which may register as a foreign currency with your bank despite the fact it is pegged in value to GBP. You won’t have an issue spending BoE issued notes in Gib but good luck trying to get rid of any leftover GIP’s when back in the U.K.

NatWest UK accepts Gibraltar banknotes manually, not at the machines, including old issues that you can’t even get rid of in Gibraltar (you have to post them to the Gibraltar treasury – I tried and failed to go in person!)

People told me they had success depositing Gib notes in Barclays and Metro Bank too.

The Gibraltar £5 paper note is not spendable after the end of this month.

I found that most card terminals in Gibraltar are coded GBP. Where there were separate ATMs for BOE and Gib notes, the Gib ones were coded GIP.

No FX fees, at least with Amex.

Even better, Amex Shop Small triggers in Gibraltar as I found when I was there last Summer!

Gibraltar resident here, have the Amex Platinum and BA Premier Cards. Lots of places take Amex if you know where to go. No currency fees.

I assume the Virgin Atlantic Mastercard won’t incur a fee?

    From your article it says…

Whilst you will struggle to find any mention of this on the card website, the Virgin Atlantic cards are the only travel rewards credit cards which offer a partial respite on FX fees when travelling.

You pay no FX fees on in-person spending in Euro, Swedish Kronor or Romanian Lei.

Shouldn’t do, as you’re essentially spending in £.
