Forums Payment cards American Express Upgrade from Gold to Platinum

@JDB Gold is also being the best card for my scenario too as I mostly spend on fx and feel it is better than than any amex card. The £195 fees comes in Feb next year though. I also utilised Deliveroo every month except when we are out of the UK for long period of time, a couple month at most. 4 lounges comes in handy when we use EZY (hopping between UK and Europe). We don’t need travel insurance as whole family covered by company policy. I am not sure what else if any I can make Gold worthwhile with the increased fees?

Ps. my partner will likely keeping the BAPP to get us the voucher but it is getting a bit more complicated when little one turns 2 next summer and thereafter!

Hmmm oddly enough my Gold is now showing as eligible – it definitely wasn’t until last week. I’ve been Gold since June this year. Not sure if this is a data point then?

I’ve only had my gold for about 2 months and was able to upgrade to platinum today.

I think it’s pretty safe to conclude that are Amex are desperate to get new Platinum card sign ups. They are a victim of their own success. What a joke.

Can’t get the link to work for 2 people who have gold card – showing no card is eligible. The option to proceed with the upgrade was still there last week.

Yup looks like they’ve plugged a hole or something. Mine shows as not eligible now as well.

Data point: Upgraded the regular (free) Membership Rewards card at the end of October. Just hit £10k spend yesterday and 75k points posted today. Was worth the gamble and I made good use of quite a few benefits already (dining credit, 20% melia code and priority pass to name some).

I guess the lesson here is not to dither when you see something like this with Amex. Don’t umm and err, just go for it.

Did you ever get an “upgrade” bonus before?

Nope, this is the first one for me.

That is good to know thanks for sharing. Re the Plat offers – HN, Dining Credits, etc. can you remember how long they took to appear? I’m nearly 3 weeks in and no sign of them (despite repeatedly chasing Amex).

They didn’t appear, I went onto live chat about 2 weeks after getting my card and asked about it, agent loaded them manually.

I received the offer via email, but it’s not working anymore. Quite disappointed. I’ll probably cancel the Gold card.

Can somebody just clarify for me please.
I have just had the Gold to Plat upgrade offer appear in my Amex offers, the 75k – 100k points one.
I’ve never taken up one of these upgrade offers before, so please, if I decide to go for it, the £650 fee – I assume I then get a pro rata refund/credit on my Gold card fee, which has still over 6 months to run until renewal?

Yes, I upgraded from Gold to Plat on Sunday. Got a small refund on my Gold card fee (renewal was due next week).

I’m in a similar position, attracted by the Plat upgrade SUB but struggling to see the clear benefit. We use Deliveroo 1-2x/month, travel enough for business that the 2x points is a nice boost over Plat, and have enough non-BA airline spend that the 2x points are also helpful. It’s also complicated by the fact that I have the IEC Plat, which has comparable (actually, slightly superior, unless it was changed recently) insurance and the same PP. It doesn’t have the restaurant and HN credit, and no on-line access for FHR bookings, but the annual fee is also ~£150 less than the UK Plat, it avoids paying FX charges on EUR-denominated spending (we can pay the bills without FX), and MR transfers to SQ at 1:1 have been quite useful for *A redemptions. But, still, 100,000 MR points makes me seriously consider upgrading the Gold and ditching the Plat IEC.

On the smaller family member crossing the 2 year barrier, I managed to redeem my first BA voucher since we were in a similar situation. We’re using 1 x Amex voucher and 1 x Barclays voucher to the US next month . Unfortunately we “had” to fly CW, as I could “only” get 2 seats WT+ for the routes/dates we wanted, and the cash price of the third WT+ seat was far more than the value of the additional miles to travel CW instead.

To add to this, hit £10k spend the other day and the points posted pretty much immediately. Seems like you don’t have to wait until the end of the pro-rata period/end of the 6m period for the points to post as originally suggested in their T&Cs

Has anyone had a spend tracker for the £10k target in the app or online?

Amex say the spend on the Gold card in the period where I was waiting for my Plat card to arrive counts, but when I ask them how much I have spent, the figures don’t make sense.

I’m only counting the cleared transactions, btw.

There’s no tracker, I was counting mine manually after getting the card delivered and starting to use it just to be on the safe side.

I’ve found doing a custom date range when looking at past transactions and starting it from when my card arrived also gave me a rough idea. Apparently the agents have to do it manually when I checked on the phone how much I had left to spend, so even then there might be discrepancies between true spend left and what the agents have said.

    Hi All,

Is there any benefit in upgrading before or after 31st Dec? I think I read that the dining offer resets each Jan for example, but does it make a difference with any of the other perks whether I apply this year or 1-9 Jan?

Do it before the new year, as you’ll get £50 HN credit for 2023, plus the £150 UK dining, and £150 global dining credit. You might not be able to use the global credit before then, but should be able to use the others.
