    Hi, apologies if this has been asked any times!
    My husband is just about to reach his target to trigger his companion voucher on the fee free BA Amex card. Is it possible for him to call up and upgrade to the BAPP card, pay the £250 fee, his spend will carry over so he can then trigger his companion voucher which would allow Business class travel and a 24 month period to redeem?

    Yes, though you might not get the fee back unless you cancel pre 2 October

    So once you’ve got the companion voucher you can cancel the card? You don’t need to keep the card active to use the voucher? So basically he could upgrade, trigger voucher, cancel card and receive part of the £250 back as long as this is all completed by 2nd October?

    There have been various posts about this recently. If you cancel, some have reported losing their voucher and Amex will advise this in the cancellation process. If you downgrade you will continue to comply with the terms and get the pro-rata fee refund, so that is a free and safer route but doesn’t reset the two year clock.

    No-one has ever lost a voucher after cancelling.

    I believe the answer is yes. Slight caveat as I understand it is that you need to have an Amex (Any) to pay for the taxes / fees when redeeming the voucher.

    Thank you, why does it have to be done by 2nd October? Is there a policy change?

    @Rob
    , there was another thread a couple weeks back, where at least a couple people said that their vouchers had disappeared after cancelling their BAPP’s.

    I know they updated the terms to say you only need to pay with an Amex when redeeming, rather than specifically the BA card, so can’t see how they can justify removing the voucher for cancelling.

    I also know one the terms says that you must remain eligible for the use of the voucher, but nowhere does it say you have to have to have a BA Amex to remain eligible. Seems a very ambiguous condition.

    Any chance you can get some clarification from Amex/BA, on why these people had their vouchers removed, please?

    My wife and I both have got companion vouchers in our accounts, and BC upgrade vouchers due next month, and our BAPP renewal is in Jan, didn’t really want to pay £500 to renew both cards, especially with not a clear plan for our 2024 holidays yet, but leaning towards renewing them due to the uncertainty, although if pro-rata refunds are offered for downgrades, it might be a better option, and cancel outright once the vouchers have been used.

    That may have been true historically, but is no longer correct.

    If my free BA card year ends in October and I upgrade now to BAPP will I be charged the full £250? i.e. does the charge work per card year?

    The £250 fee will be billed on the first (practically possible) statement after the upgrade, but your voucher collection year will remain the same so there may be an ongoing disconnect between the two.
