Similar to booking the return leg of a 241… if I have a complete out and return 241 booking but seats become available in a higher class that I want to upgrade to, if I have enough avios, can I book them as a separate booking and call customer services after 8 to get a refund, or can this only be done by calling an overseas call centre? Thanks

BA will not usually refund 50% of the Avios unless the reason for that second online booking was that the seats weren’t available (for date reasons) to be booked at the same time as the outbound. This is a special unpublished concession as the terms officially don’t allow for a voucher to be applied retrospectively.
If there’s availability both ways on your route, you could just cancel and rebook. Tiny chance that your voucher would be delayed in being refunded, but it seems to reappear 99.9% of the time.
I did this once for an upgrade from J to F, I booked F using full avios so I didn’t lose it. I then phoned YouFirst and they processed it as part of my 241, but it took some time and I got the impression they were doing me a favour. I doubt you’d get the same concession if it was from W to J for example.
I subsequently realised YouFirst is a 24 hour line so next time I just call them first!
