Forums Payment cards American Express Upgrading from Gold to Platinum – ineligible

  • 7 posts

I am trying to upgrade to the platinum card to take advantage of the 75000 points offer before January, however when trying to upgrade it says “we’re sorry. you do not have a card eligible for this offer”

I currently have a gold card and got the sign up bonus last August.

Has anyone experienced this before? I know I could apply for the platinum card separately however I believe as I got the gold sign up bonus I won’t get the 75,000 bonus. I read somewhere upgrades are different but it won’t work online.

Many thanks in advance, I just went to get prepared before ringing.

It’s a targeted offer. In the past the offer was assumed to be available if one had held the gold card for atleast one full year. But it’s random now. Or maybe there’s an algorithm that we aren’t aware of.

The hugely generous invitation to upgrade doesn’t seem to have been targeted, but the offer is effectively targeted as it is subject to eligibility, determined at the moment of application.

@Avios_newbie – long shot, but if you happen to have (or someone in your household happens to have) an ARCC as well a gold card, maybe try upgrading that instead.

Something strange is going on in the background – if you hold both ARCC and gold, the link is allowing upgrades of ARCC, and refusing the gold card (documented across the HfP website in various threads).

Thankyou for the replies all, does seem odd that I wouldn’t be eligible as I meet the criteria but perhaps they’re not happy that I’ve played so many of the amex ‘games’ in the past to maximise the benefits

I’m getting the same and I asked the live chat and they said I could get the offer. Going to ring them when I wake up and find out.

I think it is a targeted offer and they can’t override it especially if you have just opened the gold

Interesting – I was previously eligible for this and I clicked through and it was available. I decided not to in the end. But now it is telling me I am not eligible.

Just thought I’d provide an update; I’ve finally got hold of amex and was told eventually that I was not eligible as I had a £4 interest payment in October so it appears they do not consider me to be worthy.

5 years of paying off the amex every month automatically, however one month where the direct debit fails and I can now no longer upgrade… Seems fair!

You got a sign-up bonus 4 months ago, yet you now expect another bonus for changing card.

You admit to playing Amex games (presumably churning for sign-up bonuses.)

You aren’t successful when applying for an offer for which you weren’t targeted.

And you post about it on here with an entitled air.

You truly have my heartfelt sympathy.

Tbf OP was just following the rules until he hit a roadblock.
Amex must be ashamed of enabling churning at the cost of loyal customers. Either the person who runs the sign up department must be so smart or the bean counters so dumb to let this continue.

You are on a forum specifically designed to help people maximise the benefit of having Amex cards, perhaps i could suggest you visit another area of the internet if discussing the forum title offends you.

Thank-you for your response; I agree, unfortunately the days where corporations rewarded loyal customers are long gone. I will never apologise for trying to maximise (legally) the benefits giving out by huge multi-national, profit making corporations (after all, isn’t that the point of this forum).

    Totally agree.

If you don’t have an ARCC, as others have suggested, might be worth calling them and seeing if they’ll process the upgrade manually with the offer (but somehow get firm confirmation of the offer – maybe try online chat first).
