Forums Frequent flyer programs British Airways Club Use half of 241 BA voucher

  • 47 posts

    Hi all,

I have a BA 241 voucher (the old one) that expires in November. I am thinking of going to NYC in club world with a friend but I unfortunately don’t have the points for a return. My question is, if I use half my voucher to go to NYC in club world, can I use the other half for a club Europe trip one way (e.g to Berlin) in September ? If so, will the other half of my voucher still be in my account or will I need to call them ?

    Thanks !

Pretty sure the voucher can only be used on one trip.

You could do a return to Berlin. Or do you have enough to do PE to NYC?

My friend never flew long haul business class so as it was his birthday, wanted to gift him that ! I might just do a combination of CW and WT, but a one way trip to NY in WT FOR 30k is a bit steep in my opinion !

Is it because the old voucher needs to use max avoid option…

Nope won’t be able to book

LON-NYC, BER-LON as the NYC-BER leg is longer, than either of the other two.

Personally I’d fly out PE and back CW if you are limited in Avios.

@Reney, NYC in WT now prices up as RFS, so 25/30k avios plus £50 each way.

Best use of an old voucher might be CE on an expensive cash route (this is how I have used up my 3 due to expire in Sep). You still get all the old pricing options on short haul redemptions so you can pick the combination of avios/cash which suits you.

    @Soso
    – you can use the 241 on two different trips (out on one and back on the other), but as noted they have to fall within the open jaw rules. The weather is getting really nice in Europe just now, surely there’s somewhere you and your friend would like to go? New York is dirty and expensive these days, lol.

Haha i hear that but just wanted to give him a taste of a laung haul redemption actually ! Any suggestion if i should travel CW on the inbound or outbound ?

Best option might be club on way out and PE on the daytime flight coming back as it’s not really long enough to get any meaningful sleep on anyway.

Just bear in mind that Jet Blue is selling r/t tickets in J for £1200 so long as you book a few months out. You’re going to be paying a fair proportion of that in taxes & fees to BA, so it’s going to really squeeze the value you get from the miles.

How many avios have you actually got? Can you travel on off-peak dates? As someone pointed out, it’s going to cost a lot of avios as you can only use the highest option with the old vouchers. Not sure that NYC is worth using that many, tbh!

For two of you with the voucher you’re looking at 160K (off-peak) or 180K (peak) Avios plus £700 using the 2for1. On that basis, valuing the Avios at 1p each, £1200 each with Jet Blue really isn’t any cheaper – and comes with the downside of no lounge access. Of course that’s academic if you don’t have enough Avios and have no way of collecting them in the time available without paying much more.

You could look at a redemption with Iberia, without the voucher but it would give the option of balancing the Avios and cash requirements. New York from Madrid ranges from 34K to 68K Avios return per person in business class depending on how much cash you want to use. Booking from the UK will of course increase that (and add UK long haul APD if you do it as a single booking), but you don’t have to do the leg to/from Madrid in business class if you don’t want to and can choose to do it with cash or Avios. You could even use the 2for1 to get to/from Madrid with BA.

Bear in mind if you do travel to/from Madrid on a separate booking you’ll be responsible for making the connection and will have to collect and recheck any checked baggage, so allow plenty of time for that. If you can make it work, booking two one ways – outbound MAD-JFK and return JFK-MAD-UK avoids the UK long haul APD whilst getting you a convenient connecting booking on the way back. So far as I’m aware you can still mix business and economy sectors on the same booking if you have an active Iberia frequent flyer account and transfer your Avios over.
