We wonder if you can help.
We booked business class from Dublin to Miami for the end of April. We missed that one leg of the flight MIA to Chicago is Economy with United.
We called United to see if we could upgrade but this would be $900 each. We asked if there was any way to use Avios to upgrade, perhaps transferring some miles to United via Aer Lingus but could not get an answer.
We hope you can advise.
What is it, 3 hours from MIA to ORD? Is it even worth upgrading? I don’t know if there would even be a mechanism to upgrade a United flight using avios as they have their own points system, even though I think you can (in theory) earn avios on a United flight as an EI partner.
It would only be domestic first, rather than a lie-flat seat – still a better hard product than almost any Euro-biz, but not worth a $900 upgrade charge IMHO. I’d be tempted to pay a little to reserve Economy Plus seats and call it job done… unless you really, really need that bowl of warm nuts?
It’s difficult enough to get upgrades on Aer Lingus with Avios, let alone on United metal.
The procedure would be to email aerclubupgrade@aerlingus.com with your booking ref, and your request and they’ll respond in 2-3 days. If they say no then your other option is to obtain United miles and upgrade the flight with them.
If you don’t already have a United account I’d open one and, try managing the booking on there and see what offers you get. I recently upgraded a Delta flight using Delta Skymiles, which had originally been booked with Virgin points
Sorry am I being dumb here, you booked a business itinerary DUB-MIA return, and one of the flight legs is in economy? Is your first port of call not to enquire politely/read the riot act to the issuing airline as to why the hell one leg is in economy? I don’t understand why the onus is on you to faff around with points upgrades.
PS I am a user of both AerClub and United MileagePlus. IMO you’re on a hiding to nothing trying to use AerClub to upgrade on an existing United booking.
As for United upgrades, you’ll be behind the queue of elite members of MP using PQPs to upgrade, then behind the ones using miles to upgrade.
But as per my above comment, I would be querying this in the most strident manner as to whether it’s a ticketing error
