Forums Frequent flyer programs Virgin Flying Club Virgin Flying Club Gold flying KLM – seating q

  • 6 posts

    Hi
I will be Flying Club Gold / SkyTeam Elite Plus with Virgin for the 1st time following my next flight.

Separately, I need to book economy light seats from GLA-AMS-NUE return for a party of 8 with KLM. Will I get free seat selection for everyone once my VSGold SkyTeam Elite+ status is updated? Currently showing as chargable…it is several hundred £ for everyone, so want to make sure I don’t pay if I don’t need to.
    TIA

Once your FC status has updated, usually about 72 hours before your VS flight departs, then you should find that E+ gives you access to some AFKL seating options FoC, but not all. This is, from memory, because Flying Blue (the AFKL loyalty scheme) maps at least two tiers to E+, and free seating is only offered to the higher tier. I think VS Gold maps to the lower tier, in order to incentivise their own customers.

In short, you should see some options. You may not get eight together, so be prepared for that, and there might be some financial outlay required.

The bulk of AFKL pax. will be using the free selection from T-8, so as long as you have sufficient time between your VS and KL flights, you should still see plenty of options.

Getting a solid answer on this is often complicated due to the way in which SkyTeam member airlines apply the alliance requirements in practice.

Thank you very much for the insight AL. Much appreciated

Apologies for hijacking the thread, but thought it was better than starting a new one with a similar query!

I’m Elite Plus with Skyteam through SAS Eurobonus and have booked a KLM “light” fare flight BHD-AMS-CDG and return. I’ve added my SAS number and can now go in and select seats. However it just seems to be standard seats I can select and not “front standard seats” or “Economy Comfort”. Is it the case I can only select standard seats for free? And will the choice of free seats change during check in? Just trying to work out if I should fork out another £40 to move out of row 17! I thought Elite Plus members were able to select Economy Comfort but it’s hard to get to the bottom of!

I’m FC Gold. My recent experience for a KLM “light” booking (MUC-AMS-BRS) was that I could only select standard seats for free. There was plenty of those, but compared to the benefits of flying domestically on Delta, where I can select preferred seating, this felt a bit underwhelming.

That is very underwhelming! I thought I’d read somewhere you can get free Economy Comfort seat selection, maybe that’s only on checkin? I may try and start a chat to see what the score is as finding the information online has proved impossible!

I am VS gold too and booked Eco standard Y seats on AF ATH-CDG – they were free anytime from approx row 9 (excl exit seats).

On KL AMS-ATH free seats are only from row 15 or so. Even at 30 hour check in, I could only get from row 8(ish) on KL.

On a KL 737-700 free seating starts at row 15. If I want economy comfort then it’s 20.40GBP per pax. Similar story on the E190. Free seating is only from row 14.

AF/KL gives more choice to its own Flying Blue Elite Plus members, and less to SkyTeam partners. Nothing wrong with that.

    I’m FC Gold.

Usually on KLM in SH economy I’m offered standard seat selection initially. Then (possibly at T-72h or check in) I’m offered the front rows of economy.

On AMS-BHD I’ve been upgraded to business quiet a few times as it tends to be busy down the back and I’ve never seen more than 2 passengers in business!
