Specifically the Coral Coast. Decided I might head over that side in Sept rather than sticking with the East which I have done before. It’s becoming a pain in the bum though as car rental is so dear, especially as I’ll be on my tod and want to rent only one way.
Anyone who’s done this part of Oz please recommend the best things to do and best places to stop for the night, towns rather than actual accommodation as I’ll be on a shoestring for this one. Swimming with whale sharks on Ningaloo is out as they’ll have gone by then but humpbacks will be about. All ideas welcome. Thanks.
I’m actually out here now but below the coral coast. Monkey Mia gets rave reviews.
In case you’re coming to Perth area and south west aus, Margaret River and Dunsborough had some pretty affordable options and were close to the action of Margaret River vineyards (free wine tasting), the dolphin discovery centre (not free but affordable and well worth it) and the staggering beaches around Injidup Natural Spa (free and no massages 😉)
Some campsites, southcamp in the area offers very nice boutiquey pod-style camping, and you could always get a coach down from Perth and then rent a car once in the area itself for a couple of days. Aware that’s not what you had in mind but maybe useful food for thought!
I have been to WA three times – and my suggestion regarding one-way car rental is to consider reversing the trip. So, instead of flying to Exmouth then driving back, consider driving there then flying back.
When I planned a Brooke trip, the one-way charge was very different depending on the direction of travel.
(And whilst I love Margaret River, I wouldn’t visit there in September. Far better to visit during December to April).

Yep this is what I am doing.
As you’ve been 3x anything you particularly recommend? I will book the car from Perth but I only have about 8-days to go north.
Ah yes — sorry, was just trying to be helpful, didn’t spot you were coming in Sep!

Book from the city rather than the airport, just booked with Budget Hay St. for half the price.
