Virgin Black launches highest ever sign-up bonus – 30,000 Flying Club miles

Links on Head for Points may support the site by paying a commission.  See here for all partner links.

On Monday, the current promotional deal for the Virgin Flying Club credit cards ended.  This offered 10,000 miles for getting the free card and 25,000 miles for getting the £140 Black card.

To be honest, I was 95% certain that the cards would revert to their usual (poor) sign-up offer.  After all, it is quite rare that Virgin ever runs a bonus – there wasn’t a single special deal in the whole of 2013.

I was therefore pretty surprised – and pleased – yesterday to see that the offers have been extended and improved.  The Virgin Black credit card now offers a whopping 30,000 Flying Club miles as a sign-up bonus.

Virgin Atlantic Black Credit Card

The card comes with an annual fee of £140, with a sign-up bonus of 30,000 Virgin Flying Club miles.  This is the highest bonus that has ever been offered – the usual bonus is a paltry 6,000 miles.

You will receive 18,500 miles immediately and a further 11,500 miles when you spend £3,000 in the first 90 days.  Note that the target spend has increased from £2,000 to £3,000 for this promotion.

The earnings rate for the Black card is also EXCELLENT.  You earn 2 miles per £1 on the American Express and a whopping (compared to the competition) 1 mile per £1 on the Visa.

My full review of Virgin Black is hereThe application page is here.

The representative APR is 17.9% variable.

Virgin Atlantic White Credit Card

The sign-up bonus for the Virgin White card remains at the previous level of 10,000 Flying Club miles.  This is still the highest I have ever seen, and triple the usual bonus of 3,000 miles.

You will receive 3,000 miles immediately and a further 7,000 miles when you spend just £1,000 in the first 90 days.  Should you decide to keep the card, you will earn 1 mile per £1 spent on the Amex and 0.5 miles per £1 spent on the Visa.

My full review of Virgin White is hereThe application page is here.

The representative APR is 52.1% variable, including the fee, based on a £1200 credit limit.

And vouchers too ….

There are also two long-term incentives available with the Virgin cards.  The White card offers an upgrade voucher (from Economy to Premium Economy only) for a miles redemption when you spend £10,000, and a second at £20,000.  The Black card offers the same vouchers at £5,000 and £10,000.

Both cards also offer what I consider a worthless incentive – a voucher at £15,000 (White) or £7,500 (Black) for a free companion seat (excluding heavy taxes) when you buy a full fare ticket in any class.  Who buys full fare tickets, except corporates?

More information on these can be found in the reviews which I link to above.

What can you do with 30,000 Virgin Flying Club miles?

Quite a lot, as it turns out.  Remember that, once you have hit the £3,000 spend target, you will have between 33,000 and 36,000 miles depending on which card you put the £3,000 through.

London to Dubai in Upper Class, one way = 40,000 miles

London to New York in Upper Class, one way = 40,000 miles

London to New York in Economy, return = 35,000 miles

London to Tokyo in Economy, return = 45,000 miles

London to Cape Town in Economy, one way = 25,000 miles

London to Boston in Premium Economy, return = 55,000 miles

London to Manchester / Edinburgh / Aberdeen on Little Red in Economy, return = 7,500 miles

Taxes and charges will be added on top.  For economy flights, expect to pay £100 less than on BA, and for other classes expect to pay roughly the same.

Terms & conditions

The key facts you need to remember before you apply are:

The application deadline is 30th June, you have 90 days from application to achieve the £1,000 / £3,000 target

MBNA does NOT offer a pro-rata refund when you cancel your card.  Your £140 fee for the Black card is a sunk cost.  You are therefore (effectively) paying £140 for the additional 20,000 miles on the Black card, since you could get 10,000 miles for £nothing by getting the White card instead.

You cannot combine this offer with the ‘refer a friend’ bonus I normally offer, which would have got you an additional 3,000 miles.  However, this is still a far better deal than the usual bonus, even without the additional 3,000.

According to a comment from a reader this week, MBNA will let you have BOTH the White and the Black cards, and you will receive the bonus on both.  (I would not necessarily recommend applying for both at the same time, though.)

How can you earn more miles?

It is very easy to earn further Virgin Flying Club miles to top up your account.   The options are numerous:

Transfers from Tesco Clubcard (at a higher rate than BA, £2.50 = 625 Flying Club miles)

Transfers from American Express Membership Rewards (1:1) – transfers from Amex to Virgin are instantaneous as well, once your accounts are linked, unlike transfers to BA

Transfers from Heathrow Rewards (1:1)

Transfers from most hotel programmes, including Starwood Preferred Guest.  The 10,000 Starwood points from the current SPG Amex sign-up bonus would get you 10,000 additional Virgin miles.  (Read my review here)

There are also some hotels which credit to Virgin even though they do not credit to Avios.

Car rentals – Virgin offers a generous 1,000 miles per Hertz rental for example

Receive 5,000 Virgin miles for taking out a Virgin Money ISA

The ‘1 mile per £1’ rate on the Black Visa also allows you to run up miles very quickly

What is the time frame between cancelling the card and reapplying to be eligible for the sign up bonus again?

  • Mike says:

You can earn 3000 miles if you refer a friend.

    • Amy says:

This is also works when you refer yourself 😉

    • Rob says:

No – that offer does NOT double-up with this promotion. That is why I have not been promoting it. You get a smaller bonus using that link.

    • Rob says:

NO – does not work, you end up with a lower bonus. If it worked, I would have been promoting it myself 🙂

  • DAC says:

Still cant work out if this is worth it given BA has the companion ticket at £10k spend on the Black card and we always book Club or First. In theory I still need to earn twice as many miles with Virgin than on BA for me/my wife/my infant?

Perhaps worth it for short hall transfers with Virgin partners (e.g. LHR-BKK in Club with BA and then connect to KL/Singapore/Jakarta etc with Virgin partners).

    • John says:

Almost impossible to book flights with VS miles on airlines other than VS

  • Paulq says:

I previously had a Virgin black card about 18 months ago. I understood MBNA only allowed one sign-up bonus ever per person per card type. Is this still the case?

    • John says:

      I believe so

    • Rob says:

Good question. They have been imposing that rule on some people. You could apply for White – they treat that as a different card.

      • Dan says:

Can someone confirm if this is true and if they have or have not received the bonus miles after closing the account within 18 months. I closed mine about 12 months ago

  • Kenneth Tan says:

VS were fairly prompt in posting all the miles as well. Got my two lots of miles as expected. Clearing£2000 in the first month was no issue for me. It was a very painless process apply for the card and managing the account after. Slightly disappointed with the slightly better offer now but thats life.

  • Stu says:

Still card-related, I notice that the IHG Visa cards seem to be unavailable for sign up at the moment. Barclaycard’s site now only mentions the Hilton Visa. Could it be set for a relaunch? Perhaps with a different issuer?

    • Kipto says:

I signed up for the black ihg Visa card with £99 fee last week. Gets 40000 points after first spend. The card arrived yesterday.applied via the raffles link on hotel promotions page.

      • Rob says:

I have also just (re)applied for IHG Black and have been accepted, post on the way in a few days on why.

        • Waribai says:

Also applied last week for both me and the wife as we have Big win targets to meet which include getting the priority black for a 20k bonus on the first booking using the card, and then a 40k win big bonus for completing all targets. Including the 40k thanks to your link Raffles, I calculate that as 100k+ points for the £99 fee!

        • xcalx says:

Just an update. I applied for the IHG Bkack card in Jan this was my 2nd time getting the sign bonus. The Plat status was showing on my account 31/3/14 40,00 points are also showing in my IHG account. However there’s no sign of the Big Win 20,000 for using the card for a booking on Feb 1st.
Unfortunately Mrs xcalx got a no for the first time ever when applying for this card. She had also had the card previously. She had cancelled SPG and Marriott cards in the 3 months prior to applying in Jan and had not applied for any cards in the previous 11 months. Experian rates her as Excellent. Shame as her Big Win bonus of 89000 is now impossible to achieve

          • Rob says:

Flyertalk and elsewhere show that there are substantial issues with Big Win posting this time round, with the credit card one being most troublesome.

          • Alan says:

Indeed so. I’ve only made one stay for this Big Win and although it triggered plenty of the promo codes on my account, it didn’t trigger my Big Win credit card offer. I emailed their social media team and they replied within a day to confirm my stay was eligible and that I should receive the credit in due course – so even if it takes a while, at least they accept that I’m due it! Pretty good result though, will mean 78k in points from a single £100 stay!

    • Rob says:

Odd … I applied literally a week ago, got the ‘accepted’ email but no sign of the card yet.

      • Trevor says:

Sadly, not odd at all – it took about a month for my card to arrive, and for those who’ve only just applied to use for big win, good chance it’s already too late based on my experience. If it takes a month to arrive and if you still need to try book and pay with this card for a stay before the end of April, good luck. I applied early Feb, and couldn’t use card for booking that wasn’t prepaid in mid-March (typically, it arrived the day I was away).

    • M says:

Where is Barclays getting it’s data from? Two applications – both rejected as no or little information of the applicants and credit history can be obtained.

      • Amy says:

I’ve had this reason given too, despite my having a Barclaycard Platinum, and a Hilton Visa… Couldn’t find me on the electrol roll. I sent off my credit report, and they said they never received it- I gave up in the end.

        • Alan says:

Sadly I’ve had this problem on more than one occasion with Barclaycard – the difference between then and MBNA or Amex is like night and day. I couldn’t find what I’d done differently in the ones that were accepted vs those that weren’t. I’m suspicious at times that they actively deny those with good credit histories as they’re less likely to make as much money out of them!

          • sully says:

Strangely I’m starting to think the same thing.

  • Lux says:

Worth noting that the Regus Gold membership also includes ‘2 complimentary vouchers for a day’s private office use with £100 each to use either in the UK or internationally’.

Bizarrely the fare table under the T&Cs for this offer still lists Kenya as a destination… which was dropped in 2012.

    • Rob says:

Except … I got my Virgin Regus card in the post last night, and NO day office vouchers included! I will give them a call. I only got it for the vouchers as I already have a Gold card.

  • jason nicolle says:

What is the availability like, on virgin flights, for redemption seats using miles?
Do they ever release 4 upper class( family of 4) seats to miles?

    • Amy says:

That depends on the route, we got 4 UC seats to Washington, D.C. last summer.
My friend has redeemed miles for 3 UC to Orlando two summers running.
It pays to regularly check as flights are released on a regular basis.

      • Jason says:

        Thanks Amy,

I would be looking at NYC, MCO OR DXB

        • Amy says:

NYC will be no trouble finding seats.
MCO will be tricker, but patience will pay off.
DXB is almost akin to MCO- just good planning!
You can always book PE and then keep looking for UC availability.
