How to get FREE British Airways Bronze status (equivalent) for four months

Links on Head for Points may support the site by paying a commission.  See here for all partner links.

airberlin is a partner with British Airways in the oneworld alliance.  This means that anyone who has status with airberlin will receive reciprocal status benefits with BA, and vice versa.

Why does this matter?  Because airberlin is currently offering four months of free Silver status if you sign up for topbonus, their frequent flyer programme.

Silver on airberlin does NOT match Silver on British Airways.  It matches British Airways Bronze status instead because these are both ‘Ruby’ tiers in the oneworld hierarchy.

airberlin free silver status

The benefits of British Airways Bronze status, or any other oneworld Ruby status, are not huge but are certainly better than nothing.

As per this page of ba.com you will get:

Business Class check-in desk use

Priority Boarding

Free seat selection from seven days prior to departure

This (click) is the page of the airberlin website you need to access.

If your German isn’t up to much you can use Chrome to open the page and it will offer to translate it.  However, here are the key points (thank you Anika!):

  • sign up for topbonus by 30th November 2016
  • make sure to add a company email address
  • verify your email address once registered
  • enjoy 4 months of silver status (this may take a few days to update)

Existing topbonus members can also take advantage of this offer by clicking the button in the bottom right hand corner.

If you earn 8,500 topbonus status miles or take 8 airberlin or NIKI flights during your first 4 months, your Silver status will be extended for another 12 months. In comparison you usually need 24 flights or 25,000 topbonus status miles to gain silver status.

When signing up you can also get 500 bonus miles when opting in for email offers and news.

Using your new airberlin status with BA

In order to get free seat selection, you will need to physically put your airberlin topbonus number into your booking.  If it isn’t a redemption, you will need to swap it over to your BA number at a ticket desk in the airport – and have your boarding pass reissued – if you don’t want the miles to be credited to topbonus.

For the purposes of priority boarding and business class check-in, simply flashing your airberlin card (if they send you one – hopefully it is available via their app if not) should do the trick.

PS.  It is possible that airberlin will not be too keen on lots of UK residents taking advantage of this deal and may not honour it.  If not, don’t complain.

  • stephen says:

i have an existing booking with BA in January but do I now have to change form BAEC number to Air Berlin number to get the business class check in and seat selection or will it automatically appear on booking at check in desk

    • Tina says:

Add your AB tb number to your BA booking but keep the baec number to earn points on (assuming this is what you want to do!)

They only have to be linked to talk to one another!

      • stephen says:

cant see any way of adding AB number to booking, any ideas

      • Natalia S says:

I needed to change BA frequent flyer number to Avios on existing booking – I couldn’t find the way to do it online; and the check-in staff couldn’t do it either (in Sofia airport, last month). I guess I’ll have to call them to get it done.

    • AndyR says:

For seat selection you will have to change it to the Airberlin number.

      • BigDave says:

I assume that once the seat selection is done you can change it back with the remaining 6 days left to print off your boarding card?

  • Leo says:

Got a family BA booking coming up early April – any point in trying, as ends in 4 months from 30/11/16?
Also will the entire booking get business check in and early boarding if only I am Bronze?

    • AndyR says:

Yes to the check-in. I understand the priority boarding is actually only for the Bronze cardholder but I’ve never had a problem boarding with my partner who is Blue.

  • barry cutters says:

    O/T
I have a free accelerate night booked from the two free night promo last year.
I want to cancel it and book something else.

Is this just a case of me cancelling on line, and the free night appearing back in my account?

    thanks

    • AndyR says:

This is how it worked with the free night certificates from the Into The Nights promo.

      • barry cutters says:

that’s the promo I got the free night from. SO I can just cancel for free? I don’t want to lose the free night

  • Nick_C says:

Last time I flew BA out of T5 I had Bronze status, but the WT lines were shorter than the CW lines, so no great benefit!

  • Mark says:

Won’t let me register on the airberlin site. Just says error even though all fields are filled out.

  • Dave says:

OT: Is it possible to obtain two BA241 vouchers in a given year?

I obtained the one from BA Black in June then shortly downgraded to BA Blue, which now on the Amex site says hit an additional £6k spend by Feb to obtain a voucher.

I’m now in a position to hit £6k spend via a required business trip; should I use my BA Blue for a second voucher or should I just put it all on my Amex Plat?

    • jamie says:

      yes it is,

open bapp, spend 10k, earn voucher, close account, reopen account after couple of months, and repeat cycle.

      simple as

      hope that helps.

      • jamie says:

sorry should have added on average I earn a bapp comp voucher approx every 4 months doing this,

        • Klaus-Peter Dudas says:

I think the question is slightly different though (I have the same questions as it happens).

I spent over £10k on the black card then downgraded to the blue card. My statement now states that if I hit the £20k target (i.e. spend another 6k) I get a 2-for-1 voucher. They are from the same account though…

    • Street says:

I thought i was onto a winner when i downgraded to blue having reached my 241 voucher very quickly on black. however, even though it shows that you are less than £10k away from receiving (factoring in the black card spend). you do not get another voucher. i might aswell have got another black for the misses or something… lesson learnt !

  • Ian says:

I consistently got the error message until I took off the 500 bonus points check box and took off the check boxes from the subsequent pop up page. Then it went through. Could be a coincidence but this is the only way of about 20 attempts that it worked.

    • Mark says:

I tried that, still went back to the previous page with the error at the bottom.

  • Sarah says:

I can’t see UK, England or GB on the drop down under country. What’s the best one to put? I’m having to put each one into google translate!
