How Brad is flying around the world for 116,000 airline miles + £285 + $30

In 2015 reader Brad shared with us how he was going to fly around the world in economy for 112,000 airline miles and just £173 of taxes. One and a half years later he has decided to do a similar trip.

Since there was a lot of interest in the article we wrote on this last trip, we thought you’d be interested in this one.  Whilst we don’t spend a lot of time on Head for Points focusing on economy redemptions, they can be good value when you don’t fly BA and don’t incur heavy taxes and charges.

This is what he is doing this time:

itinery map

Manchester – Madrid
£30 Iberia (cash)

Madrid – Lima
25,000 Avios + £90 tax

Lima – Cusco
4,500 Avios + £8 tax

Cusco – Lima
4,500 Avios + £6 tax

Lima – Buenos Aires – Santiago De Chile
12,500 Delta SkyMiles + $30 tax

Santiago De Chile – Easter Island – Papeete
25,000 Avios + £32 tax

Brad notes that this one is tricky one to get.  When you search for 2 separate one-way tickets for the route they are not available.  However when you search for SCL – PPT you can easily find availability.  The downside is that you only get 10 hours in Easter Island on a stopover.

Papeete – Auckland – Shanghai – Beijing
15,000 United MileagePlus miles + £35 tax

Beijing – Hong Kong
10,000 Avios + £12 tax

Hong Kong – London Heathrow – Manchester
19,500 Avios + £72 tax

He is covering 31,439 miles in total

distance

This comes to a total of : 88,500 Avios + 12,500 Delta SkyMiles + 15,000 United Airlines MileagePlus = 116,000 airline miles + £285 + $30.

If you wanted to emulate this routing, the Delta miles could be obtained from an American Express Membership Rewards transfer.  It would also be bookable via other Skyteam airlines.  There is no easy way to pick up United miles (there is no bonus on their credit card and the transfer rate from Starwood is 2:1) but, again, you could use another Star Alliance airline – albeit for potentially more miles.

“There is no easy way to pick up United miles – there is no bonus on their (UK) credit card” – given recent ongoing events, I’d certainly keep a look out for one.
(Potentially a very different world to a week ago).

    • Brad says:

Yeah ! there is a way…though has never been posted on HFP

        maybe you could share?

        nice tip, btw

I prefer to spend 10 days or more in countries I visit, ever since I did Eurorail on my own (the other 3 pathetics pulled out, we were supposed to be going as a gang) as a17YO in between Lower Sixth & Upper Sixth – spending typically 1 day in each country then travelling overnight to another to save on hotels/ camping, bad idea 🙂

  • krys_k says:

Goes to show – our hobby can be either end of the travel spectrum – cattle through to luxury. Nice one Brad!

  • Mike says:

Wow – the Papeete – Auckland- shanghai – Beijing for 12,500 and low tax is pretty amazing. That’s got to be one of the best “sweet spot” redemptions around! Well done!

  • TripRep says:

Hey Anika – thanks for posting this, just emailed Rob last week about running aspirational destinations, Easter Island is on my Top 5.

    Brad – inspiring stuff!

Some very well planned bargains, hope you remember to pack your flight socks! 🙂

How long are you spending in South America & NZ ?

I’ve just made another once a lifetime booking on points, (this one wasn’t possible to buy for cash), would never of done it without HFPs! 🙂

    • Brad says:

      Hi TripRep

Thank you. I have spent 4 weeks in NZ in the past and therefore will not be staying in NZ. I am planning to stay a day in LIM, 5 days in CUZ, 2 days in PVG and 5 days in PPT inc. BOB. I am not bothered about the rest as I have been in this places before.

      • Choons says:

Hi, I did similar but paid for SCL-IPC. You can hire a bike to get to Anankena beach on Easter Island but be careful it gets dark quick and early and it is quite hilly at the start and end. Did you manage to find a way to get to BOB on miles and points? I went to Moorea instead, so missed that one.

  • Jamie says:

How is HKG-LHR-MAN only 19,500 avios?

    • Allan says:

Off peak BA and no fuel surcharges out of HKG

    • John says:

I believe it’s the off peak BA redemption.

      • Brad says:

        indeed

        • James67 says:

Awesome trip Brad, but it must hurt just a little to only transit in some of those great cities or are you getting use out of 24h stopover in some of them??

          • Brad says:

I have been to all of these places before so don’t want to waste my holiday again.

    • Mark says:

Hong Kong law states no fuel surcharges can be made and I am guessing that’s a economy ticket?

  • TripRep says:

Being a pedant here, but are we meaning taxes or….

    Tax + SURCHARGES? 😀

  • Simon says:

I’d be pretty gutted about spending only 10 hours at Easter Island, definitely one of my favourite places I’ve been to. Papeete / French Polynesia on the other hand was one of my least favourites.

Shame he coudn’t get a one way to Easter Island

    • will says:

if travelling with hand luggage only could he get off at Easter island and not get back on (without penalty). Then find another way back? i.e. have to find a single off the island.

      • Brad says:

One way ticket to IPC is literally imposible to get at least in Y. I always travel with hand luggage. I would expect checked luggage to be transferred automatically though I am not an expert in this field as I never travel with checked luggage.

  • Jeff says:

Incredible !!!…….I shack my head when people tell me they don’t collect Airmiles !!
