Marriott brings in the ability to roll over elite qualifying hotel nights

For the last couple of years, Marriott has been quietly (and unofficially) rolling over ‘extra’ elite nights earned by Silver, Gold and Platinum members. Marriott has now confirmed via its closed private forum that this feature will be made permanent and ‘official’.
At present, you need to stay 10 nights for Marriott Silver status, 50 nights for Gold and 75 nights for Platinum. (Don’t get me started on how crazy these last two numbers are, versus the poor benefits you get.)
Going forward, if you achieve enough nights to retain your current status level or get promoted the extra nights you earned will be carried forward into the following calendar year.
This is of most value to Silver members, I think. If a Silver members achieves 25 nights in a year, they will now be carrying forward 15 nights into the following year – which means they are already guaranteed to retain their status for the following year as well.
Note that you do not get to carry forward spare nights if you get demoted. A Gold member who only achieves 30 nights and so gets demoted to Silver (which only requires 10 nights) will not carry forward the extra 20 nights.
