The Shard – you cannot use your $100 food and drink voucher until August

Links on Head for Points may support the site by paying a commission.  See here for all partner links.

If you took part in the Shangri-La Golden Circle birthday promotion last Autumn, you will now be sitting on enough points to get $100 (x 2 if your partner took part) off a meal at any Shangri-La hotel.  For most Head for Points readers, that means a meal in The Shard.

The hotel opens on May 6th.  Shangri-La is already taking bookings for TĪNG, the Chinese restaurant and lounge on level 35.  GŎNG on level 52 will not open until July.

Beware, though!

Shangri-La has just announced by email to a couple of HfP readers that Golden Circle redemptions will not be allowed until August 1st.  This applies to both free night awards and food and drink discounts in the restaurants.

If you have already made a booking at TĪNG, you should therefore cancel it and rebook for a date after 1st August.

This is obviously disappointing, although I can’t blame Shangri-La for wanting to maximise its revenue whilst the hotel is the centre of attention for the first few months of its life.  It won’t be going anywhere, after all.

Tys picalaQtyta, booked a table yesterday for a meal there in June…. Wonder if I can persuade the wife to postpone our anniversary…

On the plus side the Gong on the 52nd floor will be open by the time they start accepting them.

  • Max says:

I must have not completed all the steps in the Shangri-La Golden Circle birthday promotion last Autumn, to achieve the $100 reward as I’ve bagged only 800 points.
Any idea how much is that worth?

    • TimS says:

      500 points = $50 food & drink reward.
Vouchers only available in multiples of $50 so the other 300 points would be orphaned.

      • Max says:

In that case, I’ll combine 800 pts from OH to minimise the orphaned points.
        Thanks!

        • Jonny says:

I didn’t think that this was possible to combine points, though I might be wrong

        • Jonny says:

Just adding to this – 2 x $50 would be fine, but combining 2 x 800 pts to generate $150 would not be possible

  • Jonjo says:

Has anyone had experience of using 2 vouchers for the same meal – i.e., ordering $200 of drinks and using 2 x $100 vouchers in different names to pay? Can’t see it would be an issue, but one never knows…

    • CV says:

I don’t imagine it will be a problem, they will issue a voucher in each persons name so if you had to then you could just split the bill. The funny bit is they may ask for your Golden Circle card to ensure you earn points on any cash payment you do make.

I have already redeemed vouchers at the 2 Shangri La hotels in Hong Kong for their rather plush evening buffet.

So I’ve got to wait until August until I can take the wife up the Shard?
    Disappointing.

    • Jason says:

      LOL

On a separate note, did anyone one find out if the recent Hailo offer, was cumulative spend of £20 or a minumum spend of £20 to get the £15 Amex credit?

      • andy21 says:

It is a cumulative spend resulting in a total spend with Hailo of £20 during the promotional period – I did a £14 and an £8 cab journey resulting in a £15 credit.

  • Rob says:

Yes, I think people were making restaurant bookings on the assumption that the GC website would update itself at some point before the opening date.

  • Jonny says:

I had made a booking next month in the hope that the vouchers would work by then but clearly they won’t now so I’ll rebook for August – not a “risk” though as can simply cancel the booking.

would be great if Gong did food though doesn’t seem any mention of it on their (limited) website. I wonder if can use, say $150 for Ting then $50 drinks at Gong.

For what its worth, I’d recommend Duck & Waffle (top of the Heron tower) for eating with a view. Their brunch menu in particular is reasonably priced given the uniqueness, and is approx the same height (poss even a bit higher) than Ting

  • andy21 says:

I emailed the restarants for a copy of the menus and they sent them straight away.

  • Christian says:

So me and my partner have $200 worth of points together for this… But I don’t think we’ve earned enough points to get a physical card sent to us. Do we just print out a voucher from the Shangri La website?
