If you have a Marriott Rewards account, you can earn a quick free 2,000 point per month with their new social platform ‘Plus Points’.
You can earn this 2,000 points each month until the end of November and it won’t take a huge amount of your time.
Marriott Plus Points is a new way to earn Marriott Rewards points via social media.
Earning your first 500 points is easy. Go to the Marriott Plus Points website here and link your Facebook account. After you have linked your Facebook account, you have the option of linking Twitter, Instagram and Foursquare accounts.
This will only work if your Marriott Rewards account is set to earning points and not miles. If your account is set to miles, you will have to switch to points first. Your Facebook account also needs to have at least one ‘friend’ and be more than 24 hours old.
You can then:
Like Marriott Rewards on Facebook for 250 points, and
Follow Marriott Rewards on Twitter for 250 points
That is the easy bit. You receive the points after 7 days, as long as your have not un-liked them!
You can get a further 250 points by following specific Marriott hotels on Twitter and / or Facebook.
There is a full list, together with the relevant Twitter and Facebook links, on the US blog Doctor of Credit here.
Each month (it is not clear if it is calendar month or every 30 day period) you need to go to this link and Facebook like or Twitter follow eight Marriott properties. 8 x 250 points gets you the maximum 2,000 monthly points.
For the first month you can only follow another six properties as you have already earned 500 points from following Marriott Rewards.
I did this the other day and it seems to work fine. I got email confirmations for signing up with my Twitter and Facebook accounts and I got email confirmations for four of the six other hotels I followed on Twitter. All confirmed that I would receive 250 points next week as long as I didn’t unfollow!
You can also earn points with ‘interaction’
Another way of working towards your 2,000 points per month is, and I quote:
Sharing or retweeting our posts to your Facebook or Twitter feeds each day
Checking into properties on Facebook or Foursquare every day you visit
Posting a photo each day to Instagram and tagging it with a property’s location
Using #LoveMarriottRewards, #RenHotels or #Autograph in your daily Facebook, Twitter and Instagram posts
Liking and following select brands and properties in Facebook or Twitter
This is a complete waste of your time, as you only earn 25 points per action. Don’t even think about it. Focus on following or liking eight hotels per month from the list provided by the Doctor of Credit blog – it will only take a few seconds per month. (Click hotel name to go to Twitter, click Follow, close window, go back to Doctor of Credit list, click next hotel, repeat.)
Is this worth it if I don’t already have a Marriott Rewards account?
Marginally. 10,000 Marriott Rewards points converts into 2,000 airline miles.
It would take you five months of ‘liking’ eight hotels per month to earn enough points for 2,000 Avios. Can you remember to play the game that long?
10,000 points would also be enough for a free night but only at a very downscale Marriott property. The going rate for a top hotel in London is 45,000 points for example.
As I do have an active Marriott Rewards account I will give this a go. If the 2,000 points post promptly seven days after ‘liking’ the hotels then I will keep on with it.
