Win one of many, many prizes by sharing your Heathrow story

This year is the 70th anniversary of Heathrow Airport in its various passenger airport guises.  To celebrate, the airport is running a competition throughout the summer to encourage you to submit your ‘Heathrow story’.

I initially dismissed this when I first saw it advertised, mainly because I assumed the winners would need to produce nauseous stories of how they met their significant other when they ran into them whilst storming out of the Terminal 1 Servisair lounge in disgust.  However, comments on HfP from harry last week persuaded me to take another look.

(No offence meant if you did meet your SO in the Terminal 1 Servisair lounge.  I met my wife on a flight from Dublin to Luton.)

The competition runs for 14 weeks but is split into seven two-week periods.  There are roughly 1,000 prizes on offer for every two week period.

It is fair to say that the majority of these are low value prizes (notebooks and luggage tags) but at the top end it is much better.

We are currently in Period 3 which ends on 12th July.  The four top prizes in this period are four pairs of economy tickets to Sydney, albeit on fixed dates in 2017.

You can resubmit your story for the next fortnightly competition if it doesn’t win.  To be honest, I’m not sure they will get anywhere near 1,000 entries every fortnight so your odds of getting something are good.

A couple of key rules jumped out.  First, you cannot submit a photograph if you haven’t got the consent of people in it.  This means that, even if you did meet Jamie Cullum in a Heathrow lift and he later recognised you when you met him at one of his concerts (as happened to my wife a few months ago) you can’t enter a photo of it as you don’t have Jamie’s permission.

Secondly, your story needs to score highly on the following criteria:

Quality of story;
How the story shows personal progression/ development as a result of your Heathrow experience;
If the story includes Heathrow as catalyst for change; and
How heart-warming their story is

Of course, if they don’t get 1,000 entries in any fortnight, your story of how you got food poisoning in the lounge and spent your flight locked in the loo will still get you a prize!  (If Cairo Airport ever runs a similar competition, I’ll be submitting that story.)

Do let us know if you win.  I am pretty sure that HfP readers will scoop up a fair percentage of the prizes in the current period.

Your propsed competion would probably have more entries
I certainly have at least half a dozen truly horrific experiences with the rest ranging from poor to awful

  • James67 says:

This post made me laugh. I met my partner of 12 years in HKG arrivals hall so I guess that just cost me a luggage tag 🙁

My LHR stories range from the indifferent to the horrendous. I might submit a summary of the horrendous and see what happens.

Curious to how you can meet someone in an arrivals hall, or indeed on a flight from Dublin to Luton. Feel free to share stories..

      • Fenny says:

Friends of mine met on a plane on the way to Canananada for an Operation Raleigh expedition. They spent the summer canoeing round Alaska and he moved to where she was going to uni. They got married the day after she gradutated four years later.

      • James67 says:

In our case we struck up a conversation in coffee shop whilst awaiting arrival of others, led to a date and the rest is history as the saying goes.

      • Raffles says:

I was on a private charter organised by Norton Rose (as was) to take a bunch of clients to Dublin for a rugby match, so it wasn’t as if I jumped on a random person on a scheduled flight!

        • Mr(s) Entitled says:

Ah the good old days when client bribery, erm I mean entertainment, was allowed. More chance of BA rolling back any of their enhancements than such a trip being repeated nowadays.

        • Ben E says:

Article from the Sun tomorrow: Mr Burgess (aka Raffles) was seen to write “…I jumped on a random person on a scheduled flight” [sic]. Commenting on this, Chardonnay from Sunderland said, “I can’t believe the elite deez days: taking flights for nuffink, doing wotever they want, and now jumping on people. Whatever next? Me is sick, innit.”

        • HiDeHi says:

Ah, makes sense. I was struggling to see how one could meet their future partner randomly on a Ryanair flight or similar. It’s possible of course, but it just seemed unlikely.

  • Koshka says:

I won a luggage tag for a short story about my first flight after the volcano disruption.

  • David says:

I won some Ray Ban sunglasses about 2 weeks ago – they have not yet arrived, but look pretty ugly!

  • Liz says:

OT: how long do BA normally take to email your tickets and credit your credit card for a booking. I added the return flights to our original booking 4 weeks ago – I was told the back office would reissue the tickets and charge the revised amount within a couple of weeks. The flights are showing in my account but so far no tickets and no charge has been made! Is this normal or do I need to be phoning them.

    • JohnW says:

This happened to me (booked outbound online – then phoned up to book the return). Like you say, they said they would re-issue and then charge the extra. I made the booking on 14th May but they didn’t re-issue and charge the extra until 20th June. I had actually forgotten about it – I didn’t call them.

      • Kinkell says:

Likewise, still waiting.outbound booked beginning of May, inbound phone call end of May. Booking showing for all flights , but nothing on CC and no ticket numbers issued on booking for return leg. BA still have time to sort it as we aren’t travelling until next April. So, not exactly an answer to your query! No harm in phoning, if you can be bothered to navigate the minefield of options and different agents.

    • Czechoslovakia says:

Happened to me on LX, PRG-ZRH-DXB. I upgraded over the phone 4 months before takeoff. New they hadn’t charged me, but had picked my seat in J online, and all seemed fine till I turned up at check-in to be told I didn’t have a valid ticket. Made me pay the upgrade at the airport, or was told I wouldn’t be allowed to fly as Y was full, despite 30 mins arguing. Advise not leaving it to check-in to be safe!

    • James67 says:

I too have had suchissues. I called BA to enquire about it and was told that unlike new BA bookings there would be no rush on it as such changes are processed relative to the pertinent travel date. I was told not to worry, give it a couple of weeks and sure enought, revised itineraries etc came out about that time.

    • CV3V says:

Yup, took about 4 weeks for some changes made to a reward booking before they took the fee off. Gets one manually.

  • BA says:

Right I have submitted a work of art.

I’m aiming for the cufflinks. Better not get the ‘business class’ tickets on Heathrow Express.

  • Lady London says:

Or maybe a competition to see who’s had their luggage lost the most times by BA, when connecting from BA flight to BA flight arriving and leaving from Terminal 5?

  • Andrew H says:

I submitted a story during the initial period and was later informed I’d won a notebook (for writing in, not a laptop!).. When I discovered that the promotion was split into periods running into August, I emailed their customer service to ask if I could submit further entries in the second and third periods. Max replied to tell me: “We would like to inform you that only one entry per member is allowed during the whole promotion.”

This conflicts with the above… perhaps they’ve changed the rules?
