Bits: new BA strike dates, Virgin Trains reduces Flying Club earning and Traveller redemptions

News in brief:

New British Airways strike dates announced

It seems that more of us will be getting the chance to fly on a Qatar Airways short haul plane this summer.

British Airways Mixed Fleet cabin crew have announced another two week strike, starting on 19th July.

This leaves just two days of normal service after the current strike ends on 16th July.

Flights from Gatwick and London City are not impacted, and the number of Heathrow cancellations at the moment appears to be modest.  BA has been cancelling flights to Doha, moving passengers to Qatar Airways and freeing up cabin crew, as well as leasing nine fully crewed aircraft from Qatar Airways.  None of this comes cheap, of course.

Virgin Trains West Coast cuts Flying Club earning

There are two ways to earn rewards when bookings Virgin Trains West Coast tickets directly on the Virgin West Coast website.

You can either take 2 Nectar points per £1 or 2 Virgin Flying Club miles per £1 spent.

As long as you collect Flying Club miles, I have always recommended taking those as they are worth twice as much as the Nectar points in my view.  The only reason to take Nectar points is if Virgin Trains is running one of its regular bonus point promotions via the Nectar app – these are often worth 500 or 1,000 Nectar points on top of your base points.

From 1st August, Virgin West Coast is halving the earning rate to 1 Virgin Flying Club mile per £1.

Even existing bookings are included in this.

Going forward, my recommendation will be neutral between taking the Nectar points or the Flying Club miles as I think the value of the two rewards is now roughly equal.

There is no word yet as to whether Virgin East Coast will follow.  The two companies have different ownership – East Coast is 90% Stagecoach / 10% Virgin Group whilst West Coast is 49% Stagecoach / 51% Virgin Group.  Very oddly, it is the franchise which is 51% owned by Virgin Group which is reducing the money paid over to Virgin Atlantic (49% owned by Virgin Group) in favour of paying Nectar instead.

Virgin Trains Traveller changes

….. and hits the Traveller programme too

Virgin Trains West Coast has an invitation-only loyalty programme called Traveller.  To be eligible, you need to be booking substantial volumes of First Class travel on West Coast.

Details can be found on the West Coast website here.

The primary benefit of Traveller was free First Class travel on off-peak trains from Friday until noon on Monday.

For any long distance commuter on the West Coast network, this was an excellent deal.  If you lived in London during the week you were basically getting free travel to and from your other home.

For bookings made after 3rd September, this benefit will only be available for travel on a Saturday and Sunday.  It will be a big blow for those commuters will now need to pay for their travel home or resign themselves to just spending a Saturday night out of London.

Are they using Qatar for MAN-HEATHROW? What happens if my connecting flight is cancelled in August?

  • Stu_N says:

OT: Any recent experience of Avios posting from Flybe flights? Found an article from 2015 suggesting it just didn’t work. I have diarised 30 days from the return flight anyway but please give me some hope I won’t need to claim…

    • JD says:

Mine took 9 months to appear on my account. Good luck fella

      • Stu_N says:

Just checked and they have appeared at some point since early doors this morning for me and my partner. Our return flight was only on Wednesday evening. That’s quicker than BA flights usually credit to BAEC!

  • Toddy says:

After receiving the email on the reduction in Virgin miles, I logged onto my Flying Club account and was surprised to see so few miles.

My only earning on the scheme is via trains (approx £400 per week spend). After a bit of research, it appears that Virgin Flying club changed all of their flying club account numbers earlier this year. I didn’t receive notification of this and all of my train booking have been linked to my old number… obviously not earning any points.

    I’m a bit gutted tbh…any advice? Thanks

    • Rob says:

Virgin Atlantic apparently sent all its partners a file linking old to new ….

      • Daniel Snowden says:

I noticed the same thing, but I had to update my flying club number (on the east coast site) manually. Pity I didn’t notice until after making a booking.
        Silly me.

        • Save East Coast Rewards says:

Odd, my VTEC account is linked to my old Flying Club number and miles post just fine

          • Daniel Snowden says:

Looks like false alarm on my part. Miles posted 2 days after travel (travelled Saturday, could see miles today) 🙂

  • Ammar says:

Ot – my anniversary date for the creation ihg premium is today. I read the article a few days ago but was unsure should I ring up today or tomorrow and cancel it. As I want to churn it to get a sign up bonus later in the year hopefully!

    • Rob says:

Any day from tomorrow. No rush, you’ve got at least 30 days.

  • Ceri Chaplin says:

Flying out to Budapest tomorrow and looks like we’re on a Qatar flight. However, unable to click through to book seats….currently Bronze BAEC and so wonder if there is an IT issue or some other reason?

    • the real harry1 says:

don’t want to worry you but that’s potentially bad news ie flight cancelled

you might want to contact customer services to see if that’s the case/ re-arrange flight

      • Ceri Chaplin says:

        Grrr. Thanks real harry1

  • Relaxo says:

OT: has anyone been able to search for reward flights on the BA website lately? Ive been trying since yesterday afternoon but it keeps giving an error msg.

    • Stu_N says:

Took a few goes for me but it worked eventually (was around 0700 this morning). I was starting from the “recent searches” page on Exec Club home page, was looking for upgrade availability on an upcoming booking.

      • Relaxo says:

Thanks Stu. It seems to be a problem only on some destinations like Glasgow or Manchester. Searches for other cities I tried worked fine. Bloody annoying.

  • SLS says:

Hi, a quick question. Cam I refer someone for an Amex Gold from a BA Black card?

Also, what is my best approach for churning the Amex Gold and Amex Platinum cards? I have just passed the 6m mark for the Amex gold so can apply again. Rob I will be using your referral link as a thank you! You cannot apply for platinum/gold if you have held gold/platinum in the previous 6 months can you? So I could do:

Amex Gold – trigger bonus – refer my wife – cancel mine – wife triggers bonus at my 6 month mark – refers me etc

Amex Platinum – assume I cannot do anything with this if i’m churning the gold?

    • Genghis says:

      1) No
      2) You can apply within 6 months but might not get the bonus
      3) I think you can hold a Gold and Platinum at the same time but as they use the same reward currency, getting another MR card will not get you another bonus (i.e. you have held a card granting the same reward currency in the last 6 months).

    • Ceri Chaplin says:

On a similar note, can I refer my partner for a Gold card from my own Gold card account and then get them to add me as a supplementary card holder?

    • Alex W says:

I looked into this recently and this is what I came up with as the best option, assuming you can still get a bonus for upgrading from gold to plat. Membership rewards points in brackets.

      Person 1 (P1) has gold
      P1 upgrade to Plat
      P1 spends £1k (21k)
      P1 refers P2 for Plat (18k) >6 months from P2’s last Amex gold/plat
      P1 cancels Plat
      P2 spends £2k (37k)
      P2 downgrades to gold
Wait 6 months from P1 cancelling Plat
      P2 refers P1 for Gold (9k?)
      P2 cancels gold
      P1 spends £2k (24k)

      Repeat

Total 109k membership rewards per 1 year

Total fees approx £150 per year depending on how quickly you hit the signup bonuses.
