Get bonus Avios points with Shell’s silly Pump Challenge game

Shell Drivers Club is the loyalty scheme for Shell garages in the UK.  Joining is simple – pick up a card at a Shell station when filling up and register it online.  You earn 100 bonus points just for registering your card.

It is an Avios partner and your Shell Drivers Club points can be converted automatically if you wish.

Shell has now brought back a silly but fun promotion to earn bonus points and therefore bonus Avios:  The Pump Challenge.

The person who devised this should be congratulated for appealing to the inner child in all of us.

This is how it works.

Next time you visit a Shell garage, you need to get your V-Power petrol or diesel bill to land on an EXACT amount of money to within 2p either way.  Manage it and you get a bonus.  Miss it and you don’t.

Note that only V-Power fuel counts for the offer.

Here are the bonuses available (remember that 2 Shell points = 1 Avios):

£30.00  – 30 Shell points

£40.00 – 40 Shell points

£50.00 – 100 Shell points

£60.00 – 120 Shell points

£70.00 – 150 Shell points

£80.00 / £90.00 / £100.00 – 200 Shell points

You get a 2p margin of error each way so any total amount from £29.98 to £30.02 would get you 50 points.  This is apparently because it may not always be possible – because of the way the price totals up – to always land on an exact amount however carefully you try.

The logic is interesting.  Whilst some people may spend less than usual (if your tank only takes £45 of fuel you will stop at £40), some others will spend more.  There will also be ‘breakage’ from people who fail to hit the target.  Some people may miss one target and then decide to spend another £9.95 trying to hit the next one.

The bonus points are on top of the standard points.  You earn 1 Shell point for every litre of petrol you buy, and 2 points = 1 Avios.

As well as Avios, 500 points can be turned into £2.50 of Shell vouchers or £2.50 of Waitrose vouchers. The benefit of taking Avios is that Shell converts (once a quarter) your points in multiples of 20 (ie 10 Avios) with no minimum, unlike the 500 point minimum for other rewards.

Of course, if you buy enough Shell fuel to get to 500 points on a regular basis, you will effectively be ‘paying’ 1p per Avios (since 500 points is worth 250 Avios or £2.50 in Shell or Waitrose vouchers).  This is not necessarily a great deal.

On top of the bonus points, you should also note that five winners each day will be randomly chosen to receive a £100 Shell V-Power Fuel voucher.

The Pump Challenge runs until 31st October so heavy drivers could do OK out of it.

  • Nigel the Pensioner says:

You arent actually buying Avios with Shell fuel, you are buying fuel and getting free Avios. If you are paying 1p per litre more than another local garage for the fuel, just for receiving Avios, THEN you are paying for Avios via the unnecessary increased priced but only at a cost of the price differential. There is a subtle difference.
I must say that I stick with Shell fuel and find it no more expensive in the Midlands than other brands with the added advantage of Avios. I would rather do this than pay £75 for another credit card and receive 10000 Avios “bonus” as this IS simply paying for Avios. If the card was free…….

    • John says:

All correct but Rob was referring to taking Waitrose vouchers instead of Avios.

As I buy £2.50 of Waitrose vouchers for £2.25, I would be paying less than 1p per Avios. For someone who shops at LIDL £2.50 of Waitrose vouchers may only buy them £2 worth of their usual groceries (don’t know, only Waitrose Sainsburys and independent supermarkets near me)

      • Ed says:

It’s more straightforward as your choice is Avios or £2.50 of shell vouchers so you really are choosing between the Avios or having £2.50 extra in your wallet

  • sjhoward says:

“You earn 1 Shell point for every litre of petrol you buy, and 2 points = 1 Avios.”

On the V-Power fuel (which is the more expensive stuff you need to buy for this offer), you earn 2 points per litre.

    🙂

  • Paul says:

    Pointless…. no pun intended,
If you are a heavy fuel user and someone else pays the bill then perhaps useful. But life’s too short, I focus on price and fill the tank. In any event She’ll always significantly more expensive in my area.

  • EwanG says:

Rob – you might like to edit the article above as from 1 October you will not be able to change the points into Waitrose vouchers.
I received an email at the end of August advising “From 1st October 2018 Waitrose vouchers will no longer be available as a reward. Any points collected prior to the 30th September 2018 will be converted into your final Waitrose vouchers which will arrive in your November quarterly statement”

  • Scott says:

It’s 121.9p at Sainsbury; 123.9p at Tesco; 127.9p at Shell and up to 131.9p at other places locally.
V-Power, of which I’ve had a couple of offers on earlier this year, can be up to 10p/litre more than unleaded.

Sure Shell is convenient for me if I’m going out of town, but paying nearly £3 more for a tank of fuel to get 20-30 Avios isn’t worth it. Fine if they have a bonus offer on of say “200 bonus points when you fill up 30l”, but they’ve sent me nothing recently.

    • Peter says:

Near my place, Shell for diesel is at 139.9p per litre, sainsbury at 129.9p…ill pass on this one

  • Simon B says:

The fact it’s only V-Power makes this a no-no for me. Shame as it’s a bit of fun.

  • Jumble Tales says:

I opted to receive Shell fuel vouchers but I still haven’t received quarterly vouchers from June . Should I chase or are other readers’ Shell rewards late?

  • Bagoly says:

Does having the premium fuel actually make any difference?
It doesn’t get you any closer to the front of the car, or involve champagne at the seat.

If not, then this looks to me to cost about 12p per avios on top of the 1p mentioned!

    • Roger1* says:

Aha! Bagoly has his/her finger on the pulse!

For most of us, V-Power and equivalents are quite unnecessary. The promotion being limited to V-Power – at higher prices – shows it is simply upselling.

Those with cars needing the higher grade fuel will know from their handbooks what grade is required.

    • Czechoslovakia says:

Can hear my tappets at tick over when running 95, but not on 100. But then my jap motor has VVT. Each to their own. Still wouldn’t pay shell prices just for the avios though. And I’m a pro at get it spot on to the whole liter to maximize points.
