Etihad adds a 4th daily London Heathrow to Abu Dhabi service for Christmas

Etihad is adding a 4th daily service from London Heathrow to Abu Dhabi for the Christmas peak period.

Between 15th December and 13th January, there will be a Boeing 787-9 service daily.  On most days this will leave Heathrow at 12.50 (arriving 23.45) with the return leaving Abu Dhabi at 07.05 (arriving 11.00).

There is no First Class on the 787-9.  It has 21 Business Class Studio seats (see the Etihad site here, it is the same as the A380 Studio which I reviewed here) and 271 Economy seats.

Additional capacity increases are being made to other destinations such as the Maldives.  You can book at etihad.com here. In addition, if you are not already an Etihad Guest member, you can sign up here and receive 500 bonus miles.

How to earn Etihad Guest miles from UK credit cards

How to earn Etihad Guest miles from UK credit cards (April 2025)

Etihad Guest does not have a UK credit card.  However, you can earn Etihad Guest miles by converting Membership Rewards points earned from selected UK American Express cards.

Cards earning Membership Rewards points include:

Membership Rewards points convert at 1:1 into Etihad Guest miles which is an attractive rate.  The cards above all earn 1 Membership Rewards point per £1 spent on your card, which converts to 1 Etihad Guest mile.

The American Express Preferred Rewards Gold card earns double points (2 per £1) on all flights you charge to it, not just with Etihad but with any airline.

Its sad for us that the Clubcard deals have all but disappeared, but Tesco have been losing money hand over fist in recent years, and they are a business, not a charity.

The only time I shop in Tesco is for generous deals. I’m not the sort of customer they really want.

    • Mikeact says:

Tesco obviously really don’t care about their Clubcard points anymore….they must be saving a fortune by no more significant opportunities. It’s annoying when I now compare with Sainsbury’s and Nectar…those guys seem to be pushing the boat out…I get the regular money off vouchers in the post each month…at the checkout, more Nectar offers. Not that I have any love for Nectar at all, their points just go towards a Christmas bottle or two.

  • David Coldridge says:

Don’t be fooled by the I.H.G. sale. I happened to be compaing prices in London for a stay in November just before the sale was announced. I noticed several hotels underwent a price hike just before the announcement of the sale, or the price has stood still. The best offer for the hotels I am interested in was a genuine £12 off the overnight price at Staybridge suites in Stratford. Something to really shout about!

    OT – SPG Amex

It’s judgement day for me, 5th of the month, my points have left my SPG Amex again. I’ve been promised the 2 previous months will transfer over as well (3 months worth in total).

Has ANYONE had their points yet?

Really really really need these points to hit my account!

    • Genghis says:

“And I’ve a million points that need to be transferred, don’t you know”

    • FlyUpTop says:

I was advised a week ago it would be between 2 – 4 more weeks.

      • JohnW says:

Should all those waiting (I’m in the same boat) have given Amex their new Marriott/SPG number or does that not make any difference?

        • Lee says:

Amex has your new Marriott/SPG number. Although when you call their cs will ask you to provide new Marriott/SPG number which make no difference.

        • guesswho2000 says:

Amex confirmed to me they have the new number. I am quietly confident that the problem lies with Marriott/SPG, rather than Amex, but you never know.

        • Ian M says:

I gave Amex my new number about a month ago.

I’m sure the problem does lie with Marriott, they’ve made such a mess of merger. But regardless of who’s fault it is, our contractual relationship is with Amex. It’s for them to sort with Marriott. All my complaints will be made to Amex.

        • Lyn says:

I think this might actually turn out to be an Amex UK / Marriott problem. Transfers seem to be working from at least some Amex SPG cards in the US.

    • roberto says:

I phoned Amex about this today .They appears to have kicked the can down the road and are now saying mid October – but with no real conviction … Its a crock of 5h!t to be honest and I will dump the card once my points hit ( if ever ). I wont be coming back either.

      • Ian M says:

Did you ask to submit a formal complaint?

        • FlyUpTop says:

Has anyone submitted a formal complaint about this matter? If so, did it resolve the matter..

        • Darren says:

@Flyuptop Someone did, it was in the comments section yesterday or the day before.

        • jason says:

I have 4 days ago waiting response

        • Ian M says:

I’ll put a complaint in on Monday if they’ve still not arrived. Although the last complaint I put in they settled it by giving me a very sizeable amount of points.. Points I’m still waiting for!

        • CM says:

Yes, I’ve escalated this three times now, once via formal complaint. £50 account credit each time. Still not the same as the points that I’ll be using on a $1200 dollar stay..

        • CM says:

And no, absolutely no change in the point situation, been told 2-4 weeks since last week.

    • Jumble Tales says:

I spoke to Amex CS last night and was given the same timescale. The agent seemed just as frustrated as we are about it.

  • Janet Thomas says:

Re. IHG — will Autumn Sale bookings count towards the Double Points Plus More promotion?

  • Max says:

    Got the 1,000 avios offer.

Doesn’t say that it is a one time offer however!

Wonder if it would work multiple times.

    • Shoestring says:

[The bonus Avios will only be awarded once per British Airways Executive Club account.]

      • New Card says:

Does it say when the 1,000 points will be posted?
I transferred £5 yesterday and have received the normal 1,200 avios, no sign of a bonus.

        • Shoestring says:

[Bonus Avios will be credited to the Eligible Participant’s BAEC account within 28 days of the campaign ending.]

  • Diydegsy says:

Bits, Is there anything I can do with some Bangkok Airways miles that are due to expire? Thanks

    • guesswho2000 says:

I’m going to run with “no”, unless you need a flight from Thailand to somewhere else nearby, given they’re a non-alliance, regional airline, but someone else might know better!

      • guesswho2000 says:

Even their hotel partner awards are an eclectic bunch at best. Car rental rewards appear to be an option, but I can’t work out whether they’re only valid for Thailand…and I wouldn’t want to drive anywhere in Thailand personally!

  • Nick G says:

OT – anyone got any recommendations for a nice hotel in Berlin for end of October?

    • John says:

Budget? Location (former E or W)? Boutique or functional? Chain or not?

I’ve only ever stayed in the Hiltons and IHGs, I like all the Hiltons and I don’t like any of the IHGs (but some are cheap on points).

    • Graham Walsh says:

I’ve stayed at the Novotel before. From memory it was ok, room might have been on the small side but that doesn’t matter if you are sightseeing/working.

      • Dan says:

Waldorf Astoria was in a slightly odd location – but lovely hotel.

        • Stu N says:

Ritz-Carlton is good and in nice location (Potsdammer Platz), so handy for most stuff on foot and well connected for public transport. Also stayed at the Melia on Friedrichstrasse which is good too, especially Level rooms. W-A is a bit out the way on Kudamm/ Zoo end which put me off so never stayed there.

    • N says:

I have a big soft spot for the Hilton

    • Jason says:

Hilton everytime great location and if you have diamond status the lounge is excellent

  • Richard says:

    OT, interested in people’s views.
Is it worth upgrading to CE for the early morning (6.20) lhr – mad flight?
It’s a 767-300 and looks like standard seats (not CW or F) up front. ET currently starting from row 7.

    • marcw says:

This is a decission you have to make. Do you have already lounge access? Do you have plans to use the lounge?
How much do you value the breakfast served? Is it Avios upgrade or cash? If cash, do you value the extra TP?
I wouldn´t take it, but they could be situations where I would take it, particularly, if i need TP

      • Richard says:

Thanks, I leaning towards no too as I have lounge access and don’t value the TP. Just wondering if I am missing anything.

        • fivebobbill says:

I’m just back from Madrid 2 weeks ago flying CW, BA out and Iberia back, but we got aircraft with flat bed seating both directions. I got the deal on a BA package inc 3 nights hotel, so was reasonable enough, esp with the better seats.
Not sure I would pay CW prices for simple up-front seating, and anyway, even the flat beds were just a brief (but pleasant) treat given it’s just over a 2hr flight.
Depends what you want to pay I guess, but check the planes on each leg if you do decide to go for it, there are up to 8 flights a day LHR-MAD, and quite a few of them use long haul aircraft.
You may as well be comfortable…
Oh, and leave yourself at least 2hrs to reach your gate from Madrid centre, you’ll be departing from T4S and it takes forever to get to, even with fast track!

        • Stu N says:

767s are all short haul layout now and will be retired imminently. It’s a 2-3-2 set-up so if you go for a window seat (AB or JK) then you don’t get any more space in CE as they use both seats. The middle seat in the middle block (DEF) is blocked and the D and F seats expand so are wider in CE set-up.

I’m assuming you’re BA Silver or above as you say you have lounge access, so CE gets you breakfast on the plane, extra TPs and Avios, plus a blocked seat IF you go for middle seats.

BA always use the second door (between rows 9 and 10) so if you want to be off swiftly, go for the back of the CE cabin. or rows 7-8-9 in ET if available. Legroom is also very decent in the first 12 or 14 rows – the main reason I’ll miss the 767s when they are gone.

    • Richard says:

Thanks, all useful info. Have lounge access through PP and Amex plat. Will stay in ET on the way out I think. I have already upgraded the return to club on a 777.
