Heathrow airport and First Bus have launched a new RailAir coach link from Guildford railway station to the airport.

It is timed to connect with fast trains from Portsmouth, Petersfield, Havant and Haslemere.  The journey time is expected to be just under 60 minutes.  Coaches will run hourly from 3.40am and call at the University of Surrey, RHS Garden Wisley and on through to Heathrow Terminal 5, the Compass Centre and Central Bus Station.

As befits British public transport, the fare structure is suitably complicated:

  • £9 for an adult single (app, online, through-ticketed with a rail ticket)
  • £16.20 for an adult return (“)
  • £10 for an adult single (pay on bus)
  • £18 for an adult return (“)
  • £unspecified for a ‘two together’ ticket (First Bus app only)
  • £25 for a ‘Group 4’ ticket single
  • £45 for a ‘Group 4’ ticket return
  • Child fares are 50% of the above adult fares

“*Trains* will run hourly from 3.40am and call at the University of Surrey, RHS Garden Wisley and on through to Heathrow Terminal 5, the Compass Centre and Central Bus Station.”

I think you mean the *buses*

    >>Trains will run hourly from 3.40am and call at the University of Surrey, RHS Garden Wisley and on through to Heathrow Terminal 5

The original announcement has “the service will operate hourly” and when copy/pasting you have changed this to “trains” but it’s a bus not a train.

    • Sussex bantam says:

Which is somewhat ironic – I live on this route and quite often the train turns into a bus !

      • Lady London says:

        🙂

      • Mikeact says:

And why stop at RHS Garden Wisley to pick up….nobody lives there apart from the caretakers ?

      • Polly says:

Exactly. And already a full hourly coach service from Woking.
What we have wanted, and have been surveyed on repeatedly for the last 30 years is a fast rail link from Weybridge or Walton. The amount of people and car traffic to LHR from just this small area is beyond belief. LHR, airline employees and pax of course…it will never happen…

    • Rob says:

      Oh yes 🙂

  • Mel says:

Oof. Flying fro LHR to JFK on the 26th :/ fingers crossed for minimal delays….

  • KBuffett says:

OT – does anyone know how to get a 10% off voucher for Bicester Village?
I think have a tie up with Emirates Skywards and others?
I’ve noticed a lot of people have these vouchers.

    • Thomas Howard says:

You could get a 10% off “VIP card” by visiting the Visitors Centre round the back and showing you Amex card a few years back but the only reference I can find to it are T&Cs that mention before Dec 2017, maybe it wasn’t renewed? It’s the same place you present your receipts to get a credit of Avios (or other airline miles) kind of round the back near the coach drop off.

      • KBufferr says:

Thanks, I will ask them this morning.
Spent a lot there this year, wish I had tried earlier!
I casually asked some months ago and they said it was only for tourists who have booked a ‘trip’ or Bicester or people staying at local hotels

    • tartan says:

The deal is still running – someone asked for one whilst I was in the customer services centre claiming my BA miles from my receipts

      • Tariq says:

Yes, did this last Xmas, showed Amex Platinum and they gave me the booklet no problem.

        • The Original Nick says:

I live in Bicester and know a lot of people who work at The Bicester Village retail centre. Be careful of buying seconds at most shops and especially past season materials.
The 10% vouchers are only valid for 1 day and that is the day you are there when you are given one.
One of my friends works in the offices there so I’ll try and find out about the Amex offer. I can get the vouchers whenever I want from him but I personally don’t go there shopping just because of the quality of the materials.
KBuffett, When are you planning on going there?

        • KBuffett says:

          Hi Nick
Sorry, I couldn’t reply to your message directly for some reason. I’m here now and managed to get one by showing AMEX Plat at the visitor centre.
Thank you for your helpful info.

    • Kai says:

Mastercard has run several promotions in the past too so worth checking.

    • Albert says:

Probably too late but if you’re on vodafone you can use veryme rewards to save an e-VIP pass to Apple wallet or google pay. Valid for 24 hrs from first scan. Valid until 31st August for first 60,000 people.

  • Paul says:

Why would you not spend an extra 10 mins on the train, and catch the Woking to Heathrow service which takes half the time?

This bus service makes zero sense to me?!

    • Mikeact says:

Agreed…..I’ve used the Woking service and despite early reservations, it’s pretty reliable…….as long as….the M25. If Guildford proves successful, I guess the Woking service may eventually disappear as Heathrow travellers will all get off at Guildford instead.

      • Paul says:

Why would they get off at Guildford?

It takes an extra 25 minutes, with more miles spent on the M25 (increased risk) and less frequency.

I’m trying to get my head around it – clearly there is some logic somewhere, I’m just struggling to see it!

        • Mikeact says:

I suppose you could spend the day at Wisley, (very good food options,) before catching the bus on to Heathrow for an evening flight ! But it does seem a bit strange…I’ll continue with Woking.

    • abc says:

It’s surely useful for people living in or near Guildford.

      • Lyn says:

Yes, this is likely. I have a friend who lives near Guilford who prefers Gatwick to Heathrow because of the train connection from Guildford to Gatwick. This would possibly be easier for her with luggage.

I can also imagine people taking a day trip to Wisley during a long layover at Heathrow, but that would be rather a niche market.

    • AJA says:

This new bus route is offered by First while the Woking route is offered by National Express so I guess they are in competition with each other.

Also the Guildford bus route costs £9 while the one from Woking costs from £6 so it would really be a question of how much extra does it cost to get from Guildford to Woking by rail? If it’s more than £3 then you have the option to save a few quid in exchange for a longer journey.

Anything that offers more capacity via public transport to get you to LHR and takes cars off the M25 should be welcomed.

Why are people so negative? It baffles me.

A train from Guildford or Woking or Weybridge is really what the authorities should be investing in but the surrounding areas of a potential route are occupied by very expensive houses so i think it would be uneconomic to build. Imagine the Extinction Rebellion rebellion against that? They are anti-flying as it is, I can’t see them backing anything encouraging more flying although they’d probably be happy to see “rich” people turned out off their homes.

      • KBuffett says:

Apparently Woking to Heathrow is on the cards.

        • Paul says:

          http://www.heathrowrail.com provides the proposed route.
Sadly it is likely to be a decade or so away!

          • Polly says:

We were first surveyed about the Weybridge, Walton rail link 30 years ago! And still nothing. That train would be packed hourly! Long wait.
Even a Woking link would be helpful.

Remind me………Tesco clubcard points are awarded at Esso stations which have a Tesco shop on site?

  • Mark says:

    O/T

I booked a flight on Iberia’s website from Argentina to Gatwick via Barcelona. It was operated by level then vuelling on behalf of Iberia. They lost my luggage for a week. I tried to claim every day for 21 days against vuelling although website made it impossible literally crashed wouldn’t load and kept doing errors on submission every day so on day 21 frustrated I submitted a claim on Iberia’s website (took 5 mins first attempt) I claimed Montreal convention – have I wasted my time and effectively lost out now ?

    • Mikeact says:

I’d call my travel insurance people, to investigate claiming with them.

    • Lady London says:

You can just send them a letter (ideally, get signed-for delivery), find out an email address or phone them (notiing date time and who you spoke to). If they are not providing a working means of dealing with them on this or if, for example, you currently have no web access then just do as above and keep records.

I believe Iberia will bounce you.
If they wont communicate prevaricate or refuse 3 times then considet MCOL against one or bith carriers together for breach of contract (after checking terms). Or if 8 weeks bas gone by with reasonable efforts as above.

If eu261 provides anything for temporarily l’ost bagage then you could mcol based on that which as statute would be easier than breach of contract base but iiirc it doesnt.

Others on here may have better ideas. Please keep us informef of the outcome as Iberia and her sisters seem particularly nonresponsive to fixing anything that’s their fault.

  • Scott says:

OT (but let’s test those demographics assumptions): Anyone with experience/recommendations for paying too much, but not Viagogo too much, for a Wimbledon final ticket?

    • Rob says:

As all resales of non debenture tickets are illegal, wimbledondebentureholders.com is the only cheap option.

Unlikely to be under £5k per pair for the men though.

      • Scott says:

@Rob – I think that would almost count as cheap for Deb tickets…

@Archer – sick with jealousy but someone has to get those 9am releases, enjoy.

        Thanks both.

    • Albert says:

try ticketmaster? got a pair this morning. they may release more throughout the day

    • @mkcol says:

Uncanny. I have been tasked with similar (well, any Centre Court match really) for mother’s 75th next year.
      Lucky me!

      • Rob says:

Cheapest is redeeming points for a hospitality package vs paying £2-3k. Marriott always does them, IHG had one this year.
