SAS Scandinavian is shutting down its entire operation

Is this a sign of things to come?

SAS (Scandinavian Airlines System) which operates from and across Denmark, Norway and Sweden is, effectively, closing down for the forseeable future.

Virtually all flights will be suspended from tomorrow, except for a skeleton service which will be used to get passengers home.

Here is the statement published on its website:

“SAS TEMPORARILY HALT MOST OF THE TRAFFIC

Due to the coronavirus and the measures implemented by national authorities, the demand for air travel is essentially non-existent. SAS has therefore decided to put most of its operations on hold, starting Monday March 16 and until necessary prerequisites for commercial air traffic returns.

To support our customers, we will in the next few days do our utmost to uphold a certain level of operation to enable travelers to return from their destinations.

Information regarding the traffic situation and specific flights will be constantly updated on our website. Affected passengers will be notified.

The waiting time at our call centers is extraordinary long. We kindly ask that you only call us if your flight departs within the next 3 days.”

SAS (Scandinavian) is shutting down its entire airline

Who will be next?

Will Virgin Atlantic ground its entire fleet this week?

It is difficult to see more than a handful of routes continuing – even the Caribbean routes are now dropping away with Jamaica and the Dominican Republic already banning entry.  There may be enough cargo demand to keep some flights operating, and of course there will be passengers to bring home.

Meanwhile, Norwegian is saying that it will run out of cash in a matter of weeks.

If you thought last week was crazy, it is very possible it is going to get even crazier …..

  • Graham says:

Quite unreal. All the best to their staff and customers trying to get home.

  • Tom says:

I’m amazed that BA still claim they intend to operate my flights to the US (Chicago and Nashville) in 3 weeks time…

    • Stu N says:

They will be prioritising dealing with flights departing in the next few days and will get to flights that are weeks away in due course.

Remember, this is a situation entirely without precedent. Even the 2010 volcano shenanigans don’t come close.

    • TGLoyalty says:

Qatar will stop all inbound flights to its capital Doha as of Wednesday for 14 days with the exception of cargo and transit flights.

So no entry to Doha but can still get home etc

  • Rich says:

    > If you thought last week was crazy, it is very possible it is going to get even crazier

Yup. Exponential growth is a madly powerful thing.

Things this weekend are four times as crazy as last weekend, but they’re only one-quarter the level of craziness that we will see by next weekend.

    • ChrisBCN says:

Exactly right. There are still so many people that haven’t yet twigged that they are not going anywhere in the next few weeks, potentially for several months. It’s a cat-astrophe for the travel industry, and for so many others.

    • BJ says:

And that’s far short of what mathematicians characterise by chaos theory, belt yourselves in for the ride if it goes there … but ultimately underlying chaos there is order.

      • Lady London says:

@BJ Can you explain or post more about your comment on chaos theory? Perhaps on the lead post tomorrow or next day if you see this? it’s very late and I’m heading to bed, but would be very interested in hearing more from you on this.

  • NS says:

I can see BA heading this way. South Africa just banned foreigners from 18 March including the UK and many other African countries are doing the same. Where else will BA have left to fly?!

    • Dan says:

      Scotland

      • KINGB says:

More flights to Edinburgh as the CEO is panicking that there will be ZERO flights to Edinburgh soon #Joker #RIPOFFAIRPORT

        • BJ says:

          He’ll still have the trams!

          • Lady London says:

Perthaps the airports that are less busy could take the time to sort out some things.
EDI used to be a great airport, not keen on the transport arrangements now.
Others airports showing their age and could take the opportunity to have some areas refurbished.
Ditto perhaps some lounges could review their offering.

Fiddling while Rome burns, but might keep people employed and get ahead for the next business cycle.

    • Chrisasaurus says:

      Newquay?

      • Shoestring says:

we could make Newquay a new hub, with summer flights to LHR, Birmingham, Manchester, Glasgow, Edinburgh

I think this idea has got real legs as obvs Cornwall is the place to go for staycation summer hols, wherever you are in the UK

and no bugger’s leaving the UK this summer

        • BJ says:

          Place in the sun?

        • Jeff says:

It’s full of scousers wanting to fight each other in the summer, according to someone I know who worked on the beach for a few years.

          • Shoestring says:

Definitely don’t go to Newquay except for the surfing, otherwise it’s a bit of a hole

but stray just a few miles away and you’ll find some really charming places/ pubs & restaurants

        • Lady London says:

“And no bu**** is leaving the UK this summer”
          You, @Shoestring?

What happened to the idea of a meet in the autumn? or better, in Greece perhaps?

  • Joe says:

BA are shutting down their fleet for a period of time. Why aren’t people already aware of this?

    • Stu N says:

Do you have a source for this?

      • Joe says:

In other words you don’t believe me. Thats fair. You’ll have to be patient then and watch the news.

        Oh…and airports are shutting also.

        • Stu N says:

I didn’t say I don’t believe you. What you say is plausible but I asked you to quote the source of your assertion.

Given the mix of rumour, speculation and inside info at the moment I felt it was a fair question.

    • Jeff says:

“ Why aren’t people already aware of this?”

Because it’s not been publicised anywhere

      • Secret Squirrel says:

        Fake news…

        • Joe says:

          Lets see, eh?

          😉

          • Shoestring says:

if you mean shutting down a big proportion of the BA fleet, well, we all know that.

If you mean shutting down the entire fleet, that’s highly unlikely.

So what exactly do you mean?

    • Andrew says:

I can’t see the EDI-LHR services being abandoned.

Looking forward to swift and on time domestic flights.

    • Lady London says:

Cargo? The world needs cargo. The UK especially.

  • Roger says:

Expect carnage in stock market for likes of EZJ and IAG tomorrow morning.
There is huge capital destruction coming.
Hold your cash and feel sorry for the people in travel industry.
