Morrisons supermarkets will no longer award Virgin Flying Club miles from late March

We told you yesterday that you will no longer be able to earn Virgin Flying Club miles at Waitrose from 26th March.

What I didn’t realise at the time is that the Virgin Atlantic deal with Morrisons supermarkets is also being dropped.

The closing date is a little later.  As you can see below, you can earn until 29th March:

Morrisons supermarkets will no longer award Virgin Flying Club miles

How many Virgin Atlantic miles do I earn in Morrisons?

If you are not yet registered for this scheme, you can still benefit for the next week.

You will earn miles in Virgin Flying Club for every £1 you spend in-store at Morrisons.

Full details are here.

You need to log in to see how many Virgin miles you will earn.  It will vary from person to person.  I get:

For purchases under £20, you earn a flat 1 Flying Club mile per £1

For £20+, you need to log in to your Virgin Flying Club account and check.  I am currently earning 8 Flying Club miles per £1 until 25th March.

Earn Virgin points at Morrisons

This is very generous.

In theory, you cannot earn on:

“Morrison’s cafes, petrol stations, garden centres, pharmacies, cash offices, gift cards, flower world, seasonal stores or on dry cleaning.”

However, since gift card purchases are processed at standard tills, I struggle to see how you will not be awarded the miles.  One option is to buy some Morrisons gift cards now, as you will earn miles, and basically pay in advance for your shopping over the next few months.

This offer is part of the Virgin Atlantic in-store shopping scheme.  To sign up, you need to register your credit and debit cards via the link above.   Make sure you register your partners (and possibly parents!) cards as well.

It isn’t clear why this offer is being closed, as it is only six weeks since it launched.  It is fair to say, of course, that no-one needs any incentive to visit the supermarket at the moment and these schemes are expensive – especially at 8 miles per £1.

Maybe the till recognises “zero rated” products and has a separate total for the miles calculation

    • I do not know the VAT position of gift cards, but FWIW I would consider them an advance payment rather than a purchase so outside the scheme like financial services.
Zero rated products include food which must be a very high proportion of Morrison’s sales.
These points are recognised from the card not the till.

      • Genghis says:

I thought this related to “zero rated” for miles earning?
        The answer is no, however.

      • They do attract VAT, at a rate predetermined to essentially represent a blended rate. For Amazon, for example, it was always 7 or 8%

In the same way that tesco split off GC spend and post only eligible $ to clubcard, Morrisons could quite easily send only qualifying spend to FC.

        • TGLoyalty says:

a Single use voucher ie 1 month Spotify would be subject to whatever rate of VAT the Spotify subscription incurs

Multi use like Morrison’s or JL etc are vat exempt as vat is applicable when the product is actually purchased.

And before the opening of the new trivial benefits year – disastrous stuff!

  3. I have currently got 24,000 points showing as pending from the purchase of gift cards from Morrison’s so hoping they will arrive eventually. In addition to 10% or 10% + 5% from Amex.

  4. Never worked for me anyway so no great loss! Always showed 0 miles per GBP after logged in.

  5. Originally mine was 8 per £, but has since dropped to 1. Only used once when I bought £125 of gift cards stacked with an amex offer, the 1000 miles are still pending.

  6. Yep – I’ve got 13k in pending (mixture of shopping and GCs dating back to 8th Feb (Waitrose) and Morrison’s on 13th Feb.

Let’s see if they got approved & credited!

  7. Don’t to forget to check whether you have got a cash back offer on spend at Morrison’s from Amex or other cards.

    New closing date is tomorrow:

    “Retailer Closure
From the following date this retailer will no longer be available: 25/03/2020”
