Welcome to the new-look Head for Points

Links on Head for Points may support the site by paying a commission.  See here for all partner links.

OK, we’re back after a couple of hours of downtime.

Things look a little different as you can tell ….

After eight years of using a layout which was, to be honest, already dated when we started using it in 2012, we have pulled the site into the 21st century.

I know that our core readers didn’t really care how we looked but the old theme was starting to take its toll.  HfP should hit 20 million page views this year (we are around the 450th biggest UK website) with a further 9 million articles read via email.  However, the old look was starting to impact our ability to attract new readers and secure large advertising contracts.  We hope you like what we’ve done.

I don’t want to say any more at this point because my prime consideration today is making sure that everything is working as expected.

If you see a technical issue – a broken link, a formatting issue, something which simply looks wrong on your device – then please tell us. Do NOT comment in this thread.  There is a separate ‘noise free’ thread for technical issues which is here.  Post your problem and we’ll get onto it.

If it’s a formatting issue, please say what device you are using.  We expect some issues with some mobile devices.

If you simply want to say that you like or hate the new look, then feel free to say that in this thread!  If you have any requests for new features we could add in the medium term, please also put your ideas in this thread.  The other one is exclusively for short-term problems requiring a quick fix.

You will see some minor differences around the site in terms of menus and layout.  However, there are no fundamental changes and all of the old content remains.  There are no changes to the usual ‘three articles, all posted by 6am’ scheduling.

Tomorrow I will run an article explaining exactly what has changed in terms of site functionality.

In a couple of days I’ll write a longer piece on what we’ve done, why we did it, who did it and what we learnt whilst doing it.  Given that we started approaching design agencies back in November, it has been a long process.

Thank you for your continued support, especially in the current climate.  Our revenue may be down but our page views have been consistently higher than the same period in 2019 which keeps us motivated.

Rob

PS.  If you made a comment on the ‘old’ site this morning then you might find it has disappeared.  Apologies.  Please feel free to post it again.

Rob and team, I have to say the new format is quite nice. Certainly better than I expected. Overall, it looks clean and crisp. I see others have made similar suggestions for potential improvements which involve a different banner colour background to enhance this and depending on if it works having the right pane hold once it reaches the last item with the left and central panes continuing to scroll as present, will help with your ads.

  • John says:

Prefer the old design but I don’t hate this one. The background needs to be not white.

    • Rob says:

I’m trying to work out if it is actually ‘pure white’. To be honest, it had never crossed my mind that some sites I thought were white had a smidgen of grey mixed in. You could be right – looking at, say, economist.com it appears slightly more muted despite being ‘white’. We will investigate! Very easy to change.

    Call a spade a spade.

This redesign looks utterly terrible. Sorry.

    • Rob says:

Very constructive Chris, thanks. When we sit down later in the week to talk through the feedback and decide on what will be tweaked we’ll be sure to take this into account.

      • blenz101 says:

Burn as the kids say! I know I previously mentioned making the HfP staff stand out. Another tweak in the comments section is maybe not to have all the usernames in block capitals, reading in block caps is just harder and isn’t as aesthetically pleasing.

  • The Streets says:

The update is fresh and clean and works well for me… well done! Many people are reluctant to change and will find something to moan about but they will still come back tomorrow

  • Alex says:

I hate the new look. Looks far worse than before (and I am under 30). But if you like it, that’s all that’s important.

    • Rob says:

Tell us what bits you don’t like Alex and we’ll look at it. You wouldn’t have hit puberty when the old design was first released onto the market 🙂

      • callum says:

I think it looks very cluttered (I’ve always hated the “modern” style of having lots of black text on a plain white background with minimal-to-no separation), is too bright (though I know you’ve already said you’re looking at toning down the white) and on my desktop the article is annoyingly narrow with tonnes of wasted space on the sides (though that seems to happen a lot on my small screen (13.3″) with these templates).

But as I don’t say it nearly enough (I need to try and post more when I agree with you, not just when I don’t!), the great writing here more than makes up for it so if you’re happy then all is good! I don’t doubt I’ll get used to it.

  • babyg says:

everything is too SQUARE, it reminds me of when windows squared everything off, plus its too white, my chrome browser doesn’t seem to jump to the right section..

    • Rob says:

Everything was square before! In fact, even squarer because the images on the home page were actually squares and are now rectangles. We’ve even removed a few of the square adverts.

There’s not really much we can make round, however.

  • PAL says:

Quite like it – good fresh look. Small points – I seem to see “less” on my screen (iPhone 7) in comments – I also preferred the box/separation I guess which ties in to too much white. Email box is too small. Can it not go under?

    • Rob says:

Comments re separation noted. However, we removed some elements of separation – and are planning on removing others – to try to reduce the amount of scrolling needed.

  • Matt says:

I like the new design in iOS safari, looks similar to the times and guardian apps. I do miss the old landmark header though.
