Some British Airways Amex 2-4-1 companion vouchers extended by ANOTHER six months

Very quietly, all British Airways American Express 2-4-1 companion vouchers due to expire between 1st October 2020 and 31st March 2021 have been extended by a FURTHER six months.

(Gold Upgrade Vouchers with the same expiry dates have also been extended, but that is not the subject of this article.)

British Airways American Express companion voucher extended

In addition, all new companion vouchers issued between 1st October and 31st March 2021 will come with a six month extension.  This means that vouchers on the free British American Express will be issued for 18 months and those on the British Airways Premium Plus for 30 months.

So some companion vouchers have been extended twice?

Yes.  Here is a screenshot from my wife’s account to prove it:

BA screenshot

Note that the vouchers were issued in July 2018 and April 2019 and so should have expired in July 2020 and April 2021.  (This is off a British Airways Premium Plus American Express so the voucher has a 2-year validity.)

The voucher from July 2018, which was due to expire in January 2021 after the first extension, is now due to expire in July 2021.

However, the other voucher – due to expire in October 2021 after the first extension – has NOT been extended further.  This is because this new extension only applies to vouchers due to expire by 31st March 2021.

Hopefully you will see the same when you go into your British Airways Executive Club account.

If you want to learn more about how to use it now you have the extension, this Head for Points artice is the definitive guide on everything you need to know about the British Airways American Express 2-4-1 voucher.

  • Sarah says:

Found out last night on phone to BA that voucher had been extended to Sep so I abandoned the booking that I was trying to make for February and will look for summer instead. I know today is the last day for booking in the avios sale, can anyone confirm if I have until midnight to book something or is the cut off earlier?

  • Liz says:

Brilliant our voucher from our cancelled trip in May was extended to 3/12/20 – I was trying to decide whether to let it expire or book a short trip then cancel for a voucher but it has been extended to 3/6/21 !

  • Tom says:

I have 2-4-1 booked to the US in Dec, the original date for expiry was sometime in Mar/Apr 21. It is highly unlikely that we will get to travel and I was until now considering a FTV to extend the validity of the 2-4-1. In this case how can I (if possible) see the expiry date of the voucher. TIA

  • LewisB says:

If my trip to SFO doesn’t happen over Easter then my companion voucher is likely to be wasted without an extension. Good news that this has happened as it gives me some comfort that it may happen again depending on the virus and borders re-opening.

  • Boon says:

Argh I had a voucher extended till Dec 2020. So thought I was going to lose it, so I booked for Dec.

Now with the Avios 50% off….

Do you think I can cancel my existing 241 booking, and the voucher that comes back will be extended by 6 months?

    • LewisB says:

You can check it through the eVouchers section of your Executive Account. ‘Used’ vouchers are still visible.

    • Andrew (@andrewseftel) says:

That’s what happened with the previous extensions.

  • RobM says:

I’ve just logged in to check, and for the first time ever, I see 3 vouchers all live! Just got to find somewhere to go now….

  • Will says:

Damn, mine expired on the 26th September 🙁 The chances of them extending it again if ask are pretty much 0, as usual I would assume.

    • Will says:

Oops! Mine has actually been extended to September 2021 – must have read this wrong!

  • Mark says:

I was on trying to book a trip in late March (voucher expired March) last night, was about 11.45pm and got through the payment step with Amex card, before the BA site kicked me off with a “technical error”. The “error” was that during the time it took me to process my booking they’d extended the voucher. Raging – if I’d known even an hour beforehand I’d have been going long haul to Tokyo sometime before June. Yet again, BA manage to turn a good thing, into a bad thing….in my head at least!

    • Mark says:

and now I discover that despite the ba offer page saying “booked before 13th October” – the sale is in fact still alive!! 😀

      • The real John says:

It means before the end of 13 October. But half of online bookings aren’t working right now
