Admin notice: We’ve fixed the issue with the over-sensitive ‘reply’ on mobile

One on the most frustrating issues you told us about with the new-look HfP (except for lack of dark mode …. which we’re working on) was the over-sensitivity of the ‘Reply’ button in the comments.

This wasn’t a problem on desktop, obviously, but was an issue for mobile users. The comment box would open up when you were simply trying to scroll down.

To be frank, we have no idea if the sensitivity was worse than it was on the old site.

Technically, it shouldn’t have been. It might be that the larger ‘Reply’ button made a difference. I don’t think it was anything to do with placement.

Anyway, Neil @ Enbecom has written a fix for us. I have tested it side by side, flicking between the live site and a ‘dummy’ staging site, and it does seem to work.

On mobile, you now need to give the ‘Reply’ button a decent prod for the box to open. Simply swiping up or down shouldn’t do it.

Let’s see how it goes. If this was an issue for you, hopefully things are now a bit easier.

Thanks to you both on updating that. It was annoying to the extent I actually gave up on reading the comments on several occasions…

    Thanks for that, much appreciated

    Thank you.
I was amongst the list of moaners.

I echo everyone else here, thanks for perservering and fixing this. It works brilliantly. Well done Neil @ Enbecom.

Neil, if you’re reading this, out of curiosity, as a web developer I’d be interested to know what the issue was and how you fixed it. I see the current ‘Reply’ element has both a touchstart and a click event listener, is that something you changed?

    • Rob says:

Drop him an email via his website, sure he’ll be happy to explain. I have no idea 🙂

    • Neil B says:

Yes, it is connected with the touchstart event listener. The bindings needed to be done more smartly, with passive mode testing etc. They won’t fix this in core WordPress at the moment because it can conflict with other stuff on some sites, so we found a reliable way to do it ourselves.

    Thanks! Works well.
