Amex Business Platinum giving you £150 back when you spend £1,000 – in one go

American Express has launched an interesting offer for its American Express Business Platinum cardholders.

You receive £150 cashback when you spend £1,000.

There does not appear to be any restriction on where you spend the £1,000. The only rule is that you must spend the £1,000 in one transaction.

This is an ‘opt in’ offer. You need to log-in to your American Express Business Platinum account and click ‘Save to Card’.

It is not certain that all cardholders will receive this offer, but it seems very widespread.

You need to make your £1,000 transaction by 30th April. This gives you a few weeks to line up a transaction, or find out if Waitrose sells £1,000 gift cards. You can top up your Amazon account by £1,000 via this link.

The only other important rules are that the transaction must be in Sterling and that payment aggregator transactions do not count. This is not always the case, however – these are boiler plate terms which Amex copies from offer to offer without necessarily reviewing them properly.

There does not seem to be an equivalent offer for American Express Business Gold cardholders.

You can indeed do £1k in one go in a Waitrose, you need to do 2x gift cars for £500 each in the same transaction. Can now be done from the self service tills too.

  • Greenpen says:

I am intrigued as to why Amex are pouring out offers at the moment. I assume that card users are quitting in large numbers so they are trying to get those who remain to stay loyal to their expensive card. I down graded from the paid BA card to the free one last August and I suspect loads of others are doing the same across the whole range of cards.

    • Track says:

It makes sense to help tough it out, then things will open in April with spending and (limited) future travel booking — but at least Plat benefits will have some relevance ‘later in the year’ or people will hope so.

  • Kieran says:

I assume this just works for a single payment, then expires?

  • Chris H says:

Can anyone explain what payment aggregator means?

    • Rob says:

We believe it means PayPal and Curve but it is never clear.

    • Alex says:

SquareUp, Sumup & Stripe are examples along with Curve.

Small retailers may be paying 1.25% with Square whereas it would be 1.99%+ with Amex direct

  • Chris H says:

The transaction must be in GBP. How does this work if I book a hotel in USA and:
    a) pay in Dollars, but it is converted to GBP
    b) choose to pay in GBP on their website

    • Rob says:

If pay in £ then it should be OK although this is never guaranteed because Amex may look at the country of the underlying charge and not the charge itself. I have seen cases where payment in £ to overseas businesses (eg in a hotel where you choose the rip-off £ equivalent and not the local currency) has still incurred the 3% FX surcharge, for example.

      • Chris H says:

So it is really difficult to decide where to spend the money and get the rebate? Is there any chance that you can do an update post in a week or two once more is known from readers who actually try these methods?

  • Sharon says:

This is a really strange offer as it talks about “merchants who are open” and “travelling in line with government advice” – is this only for travel related purchases or can it be for any merchant. I need to buy a new iMac for business but there is also an offer for Apple!
If I click both do I get both or only the Apple offer as that is less?
Also, this “payment aggregator” thing – does that include Billhop for paying my VAT bill?

  • Tord says:

So happy I spent over £1k last night and saw this this morning………. 😂

    • Rob says:

I spent £2k the day before and now have zero plans to make a £1k purchase, annoyingly.

  • Colin MacKinnon says:

Spent just over the £1000 with a company this evening via PayPal and got an email by return from Amex saying they were processing the offer, subject to its conditions. May be five days before it appears on my account.
