Heathrow flights may be diverted to avoid Windsor

Historically, Windsor has not been a great place to live if you are not an aviation fan.

Aircraft will pass over your house on a very regular basis and at a relatively low altitude, with the final approach to the 09L runway taking you over the castle.

(Why the Royal Family built a castle so close to the airport is a story for another day ….)

This may all be about to change due to an intervention by Thames Valley Police and the Metropolitan Police Service. They are seeking approval to impose a Restricted Air Space Order around Windsor Castle.

The order would cover a radius of 1.5 nautical miles, up to a level of 2,500 feet. Unless an exemption is made for commercial aviation, this means that flights over Windsor going into or out of Heathrow would effectively be banned since they are substantially below this level at that point.

The final decision will be made by the Civil Aviation Authority.
