  Congratulations on the move. Coq d’Argent is a lovely spot for a drink on the roof terrace on a summer’s evening. Why not see if you can do a deal with them to take over the whole restaurant for the HfP summer party? 🙂

    Have they put a fence on that balcony yet at the Coq d’Argent? I gather a couple of people fell off it there.

    I still mourn the Mappin & Webb that used to be on the corner ground floor there. It was ‘Old City’. All gone.

    But at least you’ve got Tesco (and grrr the rather nice shops in the Royal Exchange).

  Welcome to the ‘hood. My top cheap and cheerful lunchtime tip is Porterhouse Butchers’ deli at Watling Street which does the best baguettes for a fiver in a 5 mile radius. Deli Box at Cheapside does great curries for a similar price.

  Obviously plenty of upmarket spots to choose from, but I’d favour Brigadiers and Madison out of the lot. Sweetings also an institution…

    It’s been my hood since 1994, albeit with a few years over at More London inbetween.

    I was in The Ned two weeks ago and got chatting to one of the managers in the lift – she couldn’t believed I’d actually used the building when it used to be Midland Bank (the investment bank staff used to walk up from Lower Thames St to use the staff restaurant, because we didn’t have one).

      I should have known better! I’ve only ever known the old Midland Bank headoffice to be shut during my early London years, as I seem to recall they moved to Canary Wharf in… 2001?

      Must be weird revisiting the old haunt under a new guise.

    Th queue outside the butchers on Watling Street a couple of weeks ago was a sight to behold – and definitely suggested that things were getting back to normal.

    In terms of top picks nearby, I would have to give a shout out to the Merchant House Bar. Delighted to see it survived the pandemic.

    For those near Barons court, go for HG Walters, it was our go to place when living in the area 🙂
    Much better than Porterhouse if my taste buds recall correctly

    You don’t need an invite but you do need advance notice because we spend large amounts of time out of the office or in meetings.
