Thanks Rob. She will be greatly missed.

    God save the King

  • Catalan says:

Rest In Peace Ma’am. May you and Phillip travel many many miles in your reunion.

  • Novice says:

I’m still in shock despite knowing she’ll be leaving soon. I’ve only had one monarch all my life so far. RIP. A legendary monarch. I don’t think anyone will ever be able to outshine her.

  • Nick says:

I can’t be the only one desperately wondering how quickly I can get out of the UK (and how long I’ll need to stay away before it’s bearable to come back). Perhaps for Saturday we can have a more appropriate HfP article helping with this, sticking true to the idea of getting the best value with points.

    • SGJNI says:

      Yes, you can.

    • ADS says:

I can recommend Ireland for multiple short flight options, and a low key response.

    • David says:

Yeah, but at least there’s now multiple audio-/video-on-demand services (which there weren’t back when Diana died) so you can avoid broadcast media easily.

    • QFFlyer says:

I suggest not wasting your time commenting and looking into it more if you’re that desparate to go.

    • inizii says:

I’ll hold the door open for you as you leave the UK – the Kingdom United in mourning for an exceptional lady

    • Andy says:

      How tasteless

    • Indy500 says:

I’m no royalist but 2 things are certain. Today is a sad day for the country and you are a attention seeking twit. Thanks for the tribute HfP.

      • NorthernLass says:

Indeed – whatever your attitude to the monarchy she was the greatest ambassador the country has ever had and her loss diminishes the entire nation.

        • Callum says:

          In what way?

I know a lot of people are obsessed with her, but the hyperbole is a little ridiculous.

          • NorthernLass says:

I’m not remotely obsessed with any of the royals but I can see the esteem she, and by extension, the country, was held in abroad and I’m pretty sure we’ll see the effects of that loss in the coming years.

          • Phil W says:

If you listen to heads of state, politicians and executives of other countries, who met her, there views are all very similar. She understood world politics, she was thoughtful, provided excellent counsel and the UK was significantly better and more appealing for her existence. This appears to be the definition of an outstanding ambassador to me, and most right minded individuals.

          • Callum says:

I’d say grieving someone you don’t know and who has no direct impact on your life whatsoever to the extent you lash out and launch insults at people who dare express the opinion that they don’t care is somewhat “obsessed”. As for the person calling for their arrest!? Beyond pathetic.

Unless you’ve done something horrifically wrong, head of states are always complimentary to eachother so I don’t think vague claims of unspecified greatness are particularly profound.

But my position has never been that she’s not competent to carry out the role so it’s not exactly an argument I want to be involved in. I merely think it’s absurd to keep going on about devotion and selflessness when she’s living in obscene wealth and privilege, presiding over a supposedly democratic country that refuses to allow anyone outside of her own family the same opportunity.

          • Nav says:

            +1

          • Will says:

Agreed Callum. I’m quite happy to have a symbolic Royal family for historical and tourism purposes but there’s many sadder life situations in the U.K. right now than a lady who lived a long and comfortable life dying at a very old age.

Trump was probably her biggest fan globally and I’m guessing that many who like to think that she has some sort of influence globally wouldn’t be huge fans of Trump.

    • BuildBackBetter says:

A reminder that we have idiots in every corner of the internet.

      • Londonsteve says:

That’s an absurd suggestion. She reigned over a free country and long may it stay that way. Dissent and free speech are permitted.

        • Farid says:

Privileges, that I am more certain than not, she would have traded to become a commoner if she could…not sure anybody should envy her privileges when put next to her obligations, expectations, limitations,…

        • BuildBackBetter says:

Doesnt matter if she’s a queen, its just disrepectful to make fun of those grieving.
If you dont have anything positive to say, atleast stay quiet for a day!

          • J says:

Nothing wrong with people grieving peacefully in private, but forcing grief on everyone, shaming those who don’t, and closing businesses for yet another day with recession looming is going too far.

Expressions like ‘the nation is in mourning’, ‘it’s a sad day for the UK’, ‘the whole country is grieving etc are unnecessarily confrontational, politically driven, and simply not true. For many, it’s just a normal Friday and, for some, it’s a day to celebrate.

        • Andy says:

She didn’t reign over a free country… the fact we have no choice in whether we have a monarch is clear evidence it’s not a free country
