How to earn Marriott Bonvoy points from restaurants and bars without a stay

Hotel chains take differing approaches to whether you can earn points from eating and dining in their hotels if you are not a registered guest.

It isn’t an easy topic to get your head around, especially as few brands have global policies.

As you will know if you’ve ever spent time in the Middle East and Asia, the Western hotel brands tend to act as unofficial social spots for expats.  In order to attract this business, you are often able to earn points.

How to earn Marriott Bonvoy points from restaurants and bars without a stay

This is often not the case in other regions of the world where going to a hotel to eat or drink as a non-resident is less common.

I thought I’d take a look at Marriott Bonvoy today, as it is the only brand of the ‘big three’ that offers this in the UK and Europe.  Hilton and IHG do not let non-residents at their UK and European hotels earn points.

Here is the wording from the terms and conditions of Marriott Bonvoy:

Earning at restaurants without a stay is offered:

(1) In Asia Pacific: at Participating Brands of the Loyalty Program, except for Moxy, Element, Marriott Vacation Club, Design Hotels, Marriott Executive Apartments, and include restaurants and bars listed on https://marriottbonvoyasia.com/R+B (some exclusions may apply)

(2) In Europe, the Middle East and Africa: At restaurants and bars at the following Participating Brands of the Loyalty Program: St. Regis, The Luxury Collection, W, Sheraton, Le Méridien, Westin, Tribute Portfolio, Four Points, Aloft, and Element

(3) In United States, Canada: At restaurants and bars at the following Participating Brands of the Loyalty Program: St. Regis, The Luxury Collection, W, Sheraton, Le Méridien, Westin, Tribute Portfolio, Four Points, Aloft and Element; and

(4) In the Caribbean, Mexico, Central America, South America: At restaurants and bars located within the Participating Properties as listed on hotel-deals.marriott.com/cala-off-folio-earnings

In simple terms ….

In Europe, the United States and Canada, the historic Marriott brands (ie the ones which it owned before it bought Starwood a few years ago) are excluded.

The brands which DO let you earn points on restaurant and bar spend as a non-resident are those which used to belong to Starwood Hotels & Resorts:

  • St Regis
  • The Luxury Collection
  • W
  • Sheraton
  • Le Méridien
  • Westin
  • Tribute Portfolio
  • Four Points
  • Aloft
  • Element

As long as you are eating or drinking in one of these brands, the only restrictions on earning points are:

  • your bill needs to be for $10 equivalent before taxes, service etc
  • you won’t get any elite bonus via your hotel status – you will only earn base points, usually 10 points per $1 spent

Just like the Marriott Bonvoy free breakfast benefit rules – which are so complex that I managed to write a full article on how they work – Marriott Bonvoy struggles to present a simplified offering to members.

The reason is contractual, based on agreements signed with hotel owners under separate Marriott and Starwood ownership, but it is still something that Marriott could fix if it tried. Hotels should see the value in paying for points if it attracts more non-resident visitors.

Shame that the Edition is excluded, which usually have strong F&B offerings on both sides of the Atlantic.

Take a large group of people (local or foreign as membership is not expat only) for an all you can eat free flow Sunday brunch in Asia and you can earn a lot of points, along with 10% off the bill – was higher in Covid time. It’s a competitive market, but not a dining activity you see offered in Europe. I guess those hotels don’t see value filling their in-house restaurants on weekend daytimes.

You may find you have to bill the restaurant meal through the hotel accounts. I couldn’t even get a meal credited to Bonvoy which I settled in the restaurant when I ate at Sheraton Mena House, Cairo. I was even a hotel resident at the time and had to settle separately due to an IT problem at the hotel. Sheraton were simply not interested in applying the credit.

I had the same experience at the Sheraton Grand Park Lane. The staff at the restaurant adamantly said no points, despite showing them the T&Cs. Bonvoy agreed with me that points should be awarded but it needs to be done by the hotel and despite multiple chasers from Bonvoy months later, no points have appeared!

Had a recent stay at the University Arms (points stay) but paid for breakfast at Checkout and also had to chase the points for the spend. However quick response from my missing points submission.

    • Harry T says:

I think this is probably just the usual ineptitude of Bonvoy hotels posting points. My University Arms stay was also posted incorrectly last year.

  • Andrew says:

At the Westin London, I’ve tried three times to earn points in the bars and restaurants. The staff all say that you can’t unless you stay. Twice they’ve called the duty manager who also says this even when you show the T&Cs. It becomes such a hassle and ruins a nice night out.

You can get points at the JW Marriott in Dubai. I want for drinks at Cafe Artois and a meal at Rang Mahal, and they scanned my card no issues. Points appeared the following day.

  • Graeme says:

At some of the hotels in Bangkok now, the staff whip out an iPad mini and scan the member QR code at the table, and points credit with email confirmation almost immediately. Seems we are lucky.

    • UK_ship says:

Same in Singapore – QR code scanned with iPad and the points credit immediately (with a status bonus as well)

  • VALittleRed says:

It seems in practice in Europe or London this is a no
