Akbar Al Baker, CEO of Qatar Airways for the last 27 years, has announced his resignation.

His last day at the airline will be 5th November. He will be replaced by Mohammed Al-Meer.

Al-Meer is currently Chief Operating Officer at Hamad International Airport, which isn’t necessarily an obvious stepping stone. The airline is clearly keen to keep a Qatari national in the top job.

Qatar Airways CEO resigns after 27 years

Al Baker’s tenure has been remarkable not just for its length but for the huge growth of the airline over that period. To put this in context, in April 1995 – just 18 months before Akbar took the top job – the airline had a grand total of two aircraft and employed just 75 people. It has now won the Skytrax ‘World’s Best Airline’ award seven times.

Akbar was on a par with Ryanair’s Michael O’Leary for the title of ‘most outspoken aviation CEO’. In reality, this actually means ‘the CEO most likely to speak honestly and openly’ about current issues. An hour in his company – and I’ve spent more time with Akbar than any other airline CEO over the years – is effectively giving you a mini Masters degree in airline economics.

His approach won him a lot of respect in the industry, if not necessarily friends, and it will be a poorer industry without him.

Uber gift card bought via Tesco, are they limited to redemption in the UK? And 1 year expiry dates?

    • Grimz says:

Uber gift cards can be only used for rides or Uber Eats orders in the country where the gift card was purchased.

  • ATP says:

When I bought the Uber gift card through Amazon last time it was only 15% not 20%.

I’ve also been a fan of Al Baker’s informative statements over the years, however he did end up becoming a bit Trumpian towards the end, labelling unfavourable coverage as ‘fake news’ and even taking a stab at a room full of journalists in its own press conference at ITB about how ‘neutral’ journalism doesn’t exist anymore.

Anyway, good innings for an airline CEO!

I was at that ITB press conference, I don’t remember it that way.

Unfortunately it was. Not sure if a recording of the Q&A is available somewhere, but he clearly felt he had to make those comments for a reason…

Tesco site keeps crashing during payment for me. Working for other people?

  • Novice says:

Hope this doesn’t mean QR will start going downhill now. Al baker has been an awesome CEO of the airline. I rather have honest outspoken opinions from bosses than opinions which are just given to please a crowd.

  • ElSemm says:

Hi just to confirm you can buy a £100 gift card and it will arrive as £115 credit to load onto your Uber account? Mentions somewhere about max loading is £100 – maybe that’s for a Tesco card? Thanks

  • Marc says:

When I saw the Tesco deal I ran ahead of myself somewhat and saw all the other gift cards they sell, i.e. Hotels.com and AirBnB and thought wow! – that’s a great deal, 15% but of course it’s just those five. Shame!

  • pixie says:

does anyone have a method to purchase the gift cards with amex. PayPal for example. thanks
