Akbar Al Baker, CEO of Qatar Airways for the last 27 years, has announced his resignation.

His last day at the airline will be 5th November. He will be replaced by Mohammed Al-Meer.

Al-Meer is currently Chief Operating Officer at Hamad International Airport, which isn’t necessarily an obvious stepping stone. The airline is clearly keen to keep a Qatari national in the top job.

Qatar Airways CEO resigns after 27 years

Al Baker’s tenure has been remarkable not just for its length but for the huge growth of the airline over that period. To put this in context, in April 1995 – just 18 months before Akbar took the top job – the airline had a grand total of two aircraft and employed just 75 people. It has now won the Skytrax ‘World’s Best Airline’ award seven times.

Akbar was on a par with Ryanair’s Michael O’Leary for the title of ‘most outspoken aviation CEO’. In reality, this actually means ‘the CEO most likely to speak honestly and openly’ about current issues. An hour in his company – and I’ve spent more time with Akbar than any other airline CEO over the years – is effectively giving you a mini Masters degree in airline economics.

His approach won him a lot of respect in the industry, if not necessarily friends, and it will be a poorer industry without him.

Do you earn Clubcard points with the gift card offer?

    • GS says:

I’ll answer it myself after a bit of digging:
“Will I receive Clubcard points for purchasing an e-gift card from Tesco?
No, Clubcard points aren’t available on e-gift card purchases.”

I stayed in the Hilton Olympia last week. Some of the rooms I have stayed in there have beggared belief – stinking of smoke, damp, windows that won’t shut, rattly fans etc.

But it is cheap. The breakfast is surprisingly good. And now they’ve started doing a kind of mini-lounge in the bar, where for 2 hours diamond members get free beer/wine and snacks. It is table service so you can’t fill your boots, but it’s very pleasant.

Can you use the Uber Gift Card to book flights, trains or coaches in the app? I’ve read the Gift Card terms and I can’t see that it excludes that

    • AnotherUser says:

I’d guess Uber could block it at any time, but they seem keen to grow their train ticket sales at the moment

    • Aston100 says:

The Uber gift card simply adds a form of money to your Uber account (Wallet). You can have that used instead of a linked credit card.
      A bit like Amazon.

    • Hugo says:

Yes – I did it earlier and also had a 20 credit emailed to me so will do quite well
There prices are about 5 percent higher so would not do it without an incentive

  • memesweeper says:

Gift cards deal over??? I bought one this morning, went back for another and can’t get the discount again…

  • davidn says:

Has the Uber promo ended? I’m a bit late to the party, but clicking through via the link above doesn’t show any uplift, and getting to the final stage pre-payment still shows £100 and £100?

  • Charles Martel says:

Certainly doesn’t make for pleasant reading. It just confirms my suspicion that beneath the surface, virtually everything in the middle east is an immoral facade. The horror stories regarding the treatment of labour in the construction industry out there make me wonder how anyone can holiday there with a clear conscience.

    • David says:

I respect your stance. But the very country you set your feet on have caused unimaginable horrors. I doubt you refuse to pay your taxes to them for that fact.

      • Novice says:

Agree @David. UK is complicit in everything. If you are worried about morals and conscience then basically stop living. And why are you even here? where’s your conscience when you are killing the planet with your travels lol

        • Charles Martel says:

Perhaps I have more empathy for my fellow human beings than I do an abstract biosphere which may or may not be able to accomodate the carbon emissions arising from my flights.

      • Charles Martel says:

How do horrors committed centuries ago excuse behaviour today? If we can call something in the past awful because it was committed by “our” ancestors, why can’t we call it out (or at least avoid funding and glamourising it) when its being done today by others? Western countries have done more than any others to atone for past sins and many used their imperialism to abolish slavery.

        • Max says:

The ridiculous borders drawn by the UK around half of the world are what’s causing/massively contributing to conflicts nowadays. Including the current war between Israel and the ‘Palestinians’.

  • His Holyness says:

Yeah, what a shock to make a successful airline off the back of a sovereign wealth fund while you can treat non-Qataris’s like something you find on the sole of your shoe.
I find it pathetic and disgusting those who are happy to laud QR while back in their own markets claim to care about racial, gender and sexual preference equality.

  • Alastair says:

The 15 % discount IS currently available at tescogiftcards.com. I bought a £100 Uber gift card for £85 five minutes ago. (Payment didn’t go through using my Curve card but my Virgin Atlantic Mastercard was accepted.)

    • Alastair says:

And I’ve just bought a second discounted Uber gift card. This time payment with my Virgin Atlantic card was rejected but my Barclaycard Avios Mastercard was accepted. If buying multiple Uber gift cards, it might be better to buy them all at once so that you only need to make one payment rather than making separate orders as I did.

      • Barry says:

I can only order £15 at a time for Uber. It is preset and I can’t change it. I’m able to change the amount for other retailers, just not Uber. Only allows me to add 3 to my basket for each transaction also. Very frustrating!
