Mongolian Airlines looking to join oneworld

The CEO of MIAT Mongolian Airlines, Munkhtamir Batbayar, told CNN in an interview this week that the airline is keen to join oneworld connect.

oneworld connect is a halfway house to full oneworld membership, with Fiji Airways the only current oneworld connect member.

MIAT Mongolian Airlines may join oneworld alliance

Airlines which join oneworld connect:

  • offer a restricted range of benefits to oneworld elite members (such as British Airways Executive Club elites)
  • offer a more extensive range of oneworld member benefits to their ‘sponsor airlines’, ie one or two carriers which work with the airline to help it through the oneworld process

British Airways is a ‘sponsor airline’ for Fiji Airways, allowing elite members of British Airways Executive Club to enjoy benefits whilst flying on the carrier. You can also redeem Avios for Fiji Airways flights at ba.com.

It seems more likely that Cathay Pacific and Japan Airlines would sponsor MIAT into oneworld, based on its existing relationships.

MIAT is a small airline with just eight aircraft in its fleet, including one Boeing 787. It serves 20 destinations in eight countries.

I was under impression that MIAT was gravitating more towards Lufthansa, no? 🇩🇪

Doubt it. Other than that MIAT has FRA as its principal European destination, the closest link they have is with Cathay Pacific – with whom there is a codeshare arrangement via HKG to various destinations across Asia-Pacific.

‘You can also redeem Avios for Fiji Airways flights at ba.com’ is a fine thought. As is hydrogen fusion at room temperature. A great theory, but has anyone managed in practice? Neither Fleishmann nor Pons managed and I certainly have not. Zero availability on ba.com for Fiji flights, the same flights that are clearly visible and bookable on other oneworld members’ search tools.

However; one can redeem over the ‘phone, having found your availability using somebody else’s tools, one can ring and book. Only to be told at latterly that pricing of said booking made takes 48hrs, please call back. When one calls back after 48hrs gets told that it takes 7 days and to wait for the email. Then, after receiving no email, one rings back on the 8th day, they find that the booking has made no measurable progress and the booking auto-cancels itself the following day if the pricing team do not put their oatmilk mochachinolattes down at some point in the next 24hrs and set a price that can be paid.

    Pfft!

Einstein’s definition of madness needs reframing for a 21st Century audience: using BA IT to perform tasks, any tasks, and expecting a positive outcome.

10 days in the Celestine Suite @ £85k and you only get 1 bottle of poo. I’m going to Premier Inn next time.
