The CEO of MIAT Mongolian Airlines, Munkhtamir Batbayar, told CNN in an interview this week that the airline is keen to join oneworld connect.
oneworld connect is a halfway house to full oneworld membership, with Fiji Airways the only current oneworld connect member.

Airlines which join oneworld connect:
- offer a restricted range of benefits to oneworld elite members (such as British Airways Executive Club elites)
- offer a more extensive range of oneworld member benefits to their ‘sponsor airlines’, ie one or two carriers which work with the airline to help it through the oneworld process
British Airways is a ‘sponsor airline’ for Fiji Airways, allowing elite members of British Airways Executive Club to enjoy benefits whilst flying on the carrier. You can also redeem Avios for Fiji Airways flights at ba.com.
It seems more likely that Cathay Pacific and Japan Airlines would sponsor MIAT into oneworld, based on its existing relationships.
MIAT is a small airline with just eight aircraft in its fleet, including one Boeing 787. It serves 20 destinations in eight countries.
