Hyatt opens a hotel in Davos

If you are planning a Swiss trip, it is worth flagging that Hyatt is now present in Davos.

Hotel Flüela Davos has just been added as part of Hyatt’s Unbound Collection. This is Hyatt’s equivalent of Hilton’s Curio or Marriott’s Autograph and is for independent hotels which want to retain more autonomy whilst also being part of a larger group for marketing purposes.

Hotel Flüela Davos originally opened in 1868 and the images do give the impression of a typical historical ski hotel.

It has just 51 rooms and suites, with each room having access to a state-of-the-art private ski locker, access to the Flüela Soul Spa, a ski butler and a discount on ski rental equipment.

The wellness area includes two saunas, two steam rooms, a relaxation room, two treatment rooms, an indoor swimming pool and an outdoor hot tub.

Redemptions could well be a bargain at peak times, especially for suites. Over February half term, for example, a suite is 43,000 Hyatt points per night or £840 in cash. It’s worth keeping an eye on future Hyatt ‘buy points’ promotions, although there isn’t one running at the moment. The page to buy Hyatt points is here.

Just because it’s tricky to earn Hyatt points in the UK (there are no credit card partners) doesn’t mean you can’t take advantage of buying points cheaply. I did this to get a bargain at Park Hyatt New York this autumn and saved 55% on the cash rate.

Isn’t the competition to Bangkok actually the Gulf superconnectors? Scoot barely lasted one season on LGW-BKK!

    • memesweeper says:

Plenty of people would prefer to fly direct.

A group of my son’s friends— classic backpacker group — went with Singapore for their recent trip. There is a lot of leisure demand for SE Asia.

    • SamG says:

Scoot started the route trying to find something to do with it’s 787s whilst Asia opened up. They can likely make more money on mid haul to Japan, China Aus etc

The other advantage of taking an Asian or ME carrier is the ability to open jaw. My family visited me in Singapore a few times and would always fly back from Bali or Thailand etc

  • Gordon says:

Flown Thai and Eva to Bkk, I found both good. It would be good if BA returned so I could use a 2-4-1.

I’m not sure your rationale makes it high on their list of priorities! (but I agree!)

  • Lemeng says:

No lack of traffic rights for London -Bangkok. Just notoriously low yields for airlines, thanks to historic low pricing and lots of capacity via the Gulf hubs. That’s why BA pulled out and is unlikely to go back in a hurry.

BTW Norse doesn’t operate gas guzzling B747s, B777s, A380s but more economical B789s in narrow seat 3-3-3 configuration without generous legroom.

      • Lemeng says:

True, but that’s still no guarantee of making money even in supposedly high yield markets like the North Atlantic.

  • SamG says:

I’m actually surprised Norse aren’t doing P&O cruise charters . They seemingly struggled to get capacity and ended up with Maleth Aero who have had some reliability issues and caused a lot of upset with their passengers as they have no premium option. The relatively big premium cabin would come in handy.

Could also do some charter ski runs at peak times etc

Park Hyatt Marrakech is now bookable from February. From 21k points might be a good deal but that depends on how you assess the £500-600 cash rates: higher than the Fairmont but lower than the FS/MO.

  • Richie says:

Norse just need to pay @Rob a big fat number of GBPs to sort their business plan out and to design an FFP.

  • Matthias says:

Bangkok is super low yield and 12h+ flight so you can’t use the same plane each day – though doesn’t sound like they’re short of planes.

Is there any low cost carrier that has made a London to Asia route work? I remember flying with Oasis to Hong Kong 20 years ago, but they didn’t last long either.

  • Doommonger says:

Hyatt Davos, got a last minute cancellation, for the WEF in January, Henry K apparently won’t be needing it this year.
