Hyatt opens a hotel in Davos

If you are planning a Swiss trip, it is worth flagging that Hyatt is now present in Davos.

Hotel Flüela Davos has just been added as part of Hyatt’s Unbound Collection. This is Hyatt’s equivalent of Hilton’s Curio or Marriott’s Autograph and is for independent hotels which want to retain more autonomy whilst also being part of a larger group for marketing purposes.

Hotel Flüela Davos originally opened in 1868 and the images do give the impression of a typical historical ski hotel.

It has just 51 rooms and suites, with each room having access to a state-of-the-art private ski locker, access to the Flüela Soul Spa, a ski butler and a discount on ski rental equipment.

The wellness area includes two saunas, two steam rooms, a relaxation room, two treatment rooms, an indoor swimming pool and an outdoor hot tub.

Redemptions could well be a bargain at peak times, especially for suites. Over February half term, for example, a suite is 43,000 Hyatt points per night or £840 in cash. It’s worth keeping an eye on future Hyatt ‘buy points’ promotions, although there isn’t one running at the moment. The page to buy Hyatt points is here.

Just because it’s tricky to earn Hyatt points in the UK (there are no credit card partners) doesn’t mean you can’t take advantage of buying points cheaply. I did this to get a bargain at Park Hyatt New York this autumn and saved 55% on the cash rate.

The backpacker market doesn’t work well for budget airlines. They get a lot of their revenue from extras for bags, food and drink, seat choice etc. Backpackers are happy to forgo such luxuries. Families are where budget airlines make their money on extras…

  • Bernard says:

Perhaps Norse have found a more rewarding lower risk use for the 787-9 capacity freed up – like a wet lease?

As for Bangkok, can someone explain the obsession with this? (In rational terms)?

    • Chris W says:

I haven’t heard of Norse leasing their 787s to anyone this winter. There would be no shortage of spare 787s in Europe over winter.

BKK is discussed here frequently because it is a popular leisure destination that would be an idea 241 companion voucher redemption. It was presumably cut because there was little paid premium demand but people keep requesting it be reinstated because they want to redeem Avios for a holiday

      • Rob says:

Norse has a ‘power by the hour’ deal on their aircraft, I think, so low value charter leases may not work for them.

        • Bernard says:

Though that depends on the rate they pay.
Worked with Air Europa, for example.

  • Chris W says:

Agree they should have given BKK a go. It is the BA route people here complain the most about being cut and perfect for the backpacker market.

I have said it before and I will say if again. Why did they not try Dubai? Even if it was DWC rather than DXB? Could they really not get landing rights given how much Wizz have grown at AUH?

Plenty of winter sun demand and the existing nonstop options are pricey?

    • BBbetter says:

Dubai is a good shout. Not just in terms of demand, but even from a turnaround and capacity utilisation perspective. Can only suspect BA / Emirates lobbying hard to keep others out.

  • Super Secret Stuff says:

That’s a shame I liked my recent flights with Norse, will do a write up once I find time. Might be to do with the amount of charter flights they’re getting or something. I know TUI use Norse a bit

Additionally, I think BKK will be coming soon to Norse, as one way low cost fares suit backpackers

  • Dan says:

It seems Norse has further trimmed this winter at the same time. Barbados now down to 1 per week, occasionally 2, for 2023/24 season?

  • John says:

Airport/overflight/handling fees at BKK and SEA countries have gotten out of control for the LCC model. That’s why.

  • BJ says:

OT BIT: on the move atm so just posting this here quickly for HfP/others to follow up – 3500 clubcard points on Tesco Pet Insurance through 28/2. Use code ‘WINTER’.

  • Bernard says:

Are there any route rights left for CPT?
Ticket prices insane for a cartel oligopoly from Europe.
With ability to fly overnight there and do a day flight back for maximum utilisation it’s surprising not to see Norse try that.
