Amazon is running a new promotion on Uber gift cards.

Via this link, you can purchase an Uber gift card – valid for Uber rides and Uber Eats – for 10% off.

This isn’t as good as some of the 20% deals we’ve seen in the past, but it’s clearly better than nothing. The maximum single gift card you can buy is £150 and the T&C say that you can only take advantage of this offer once, although in the past this hasn’t been applied.

20% off gift cards at Amazon

It works fine as you can see here:

The code is emailed to you – although plastic gift cards via Royal Mail are also available if you want one – and you can quickly add the credit to your Uber account. My order arrived in nine minutes.

Note that the credit can only be used in the UK. This isn’t something you should do if you can’t get Uber where you live but you are planning a trip to, say, the US soon – the credit won’t work there.

You can order here. The offer runs to 25th March.

Uber tries to encourage you to redeem your gift card by putting it into an Uber Money account. This involves a credit search and stops you using it for rail tickets. Instead, add it under ‘Promotional Code’ in the app and it goes onto your balance as it always used to. (If you already have an Uber Money account you are stuck – it will be added to that however you redeeem it, which means no rail ticket redemptions possible.)

Do you know if I still earn Avios for train tickets booked using Uber Wallet?

    • CamFlyer says:

My recent experience is random. Full miles on a wallet paid ticket on Monday, miles only on the wallet paid part today, and usually miles only on the cash paid portion. YMMV.

    • Paul says:

I have been getting Avios on my train tickets but no idea on what spend!

  • Peter says:

I bought a gift card and (given the comments on this forum) loaded it to my wallet and attempted to buy a train ticket. The wallet was showing as not available as a payment mechanism. I took it up with Uber and they (eventually) said: “We can confirm that all gift cards added to you wallet will not be redeemed as Uber Money and cannot be converted to Uber Credit. At this time Uber Money cannot be used to cover Uber Travel tickets.
Thank you for your understanding in this matter.” Bottom line then, they cannot be used to buy train tickets.

This is not made clear in the terms and conditions (I checked before purchase) so I will be pressing for a refund. Other potential purchasers beware.

How did you load it to your wallet? Via the Uber Money link or the ‘Add a Promotional Code’ link?

Did you already have Uber Money on?

If Uber Money is turned off and you add the code via ‘Add a Promotional Code’ then you can use it for train tickets. I have just tested it on my account and others have posted the same.

  • Peter says:

Rob – I followed the instructions which came with the card which were: To redeem this gift card: 1. Open the Account Menu and tap “Wallet” 2. Tap on the “+ Add funds” button on the Uber Cash card 3. Tap on the “Gift card” button 4. Enter Gift Code and tap “Add”. So, broadly it looks like the Uber Money link rather than the ‘Add a Promotional Code’ link.

This was the first time of using Uber Money, so maybe it was previously off but it did load correctly and even now shows as £150 in the Wallet. I’ve just bought another train ticket and whilst ‘Cash’ is shown in the list of available payment methods, it has a red ‘Unavailable’ message alongside it. Uber has however agreed to a refund.

    • Rob says:

You shouldn’t have followed Uber’s instructions 🙂 Would have worked fine via ‘Add a Promotional Code’.

  • Peter says:

Thanks for pointing that out Rob!!
