easyJet has been one of the few rays of light at London Southend airport since the pandemic, as virtually the only airline to run any scheduled services.

Demand is obviously going well because, in a major boost for the airport, easyJet is to make London Southend its tenth UK base.

Three aircraft will be based at Southend from next summer, creating 130 jobs for pilots and crew and many more in support roles.

Six new routes will go on sale today for travel from 1st May 2025:

  • Pisa
  • Gran Canaria
  • Dalaman
  • Antalya
  • Marrakech
  • Enfidha

Existing routes, served by aircraft based elsewhere, are expected to continue:

  • Amsterdam
  • Geneva
  • Faro
  • Palma de Mallorca
  • Malaga
  • Paris Charles de Gaulle

If you’ve never travelled from Southend, it is exceptionally easy to reach from central London with direct trains from Liverpool Street and Stratford. The walk from the station to the terminal door is literally just a minute.

Since the pandemic EJ have really only had domestic flights from Stansted and a handful of flights from Southend starting last summer so really not a surprise.
Economically Southend must make sense for them.
The airport is connected directly by train to London and you can have breakfast at the Holiday Inn and walk to the terminal in 5 minutes so yes, a joy to fly out of.

How opportune that Easyjet have announced more flights from the town with the highest NHS waiting list in the country, I wonder if the two things are related by any chance?

  • Nick says:

Is this not a re-opening of a closed base? I seem to remember Easyjet had a base in Southend pre-covid, as did Ryanair. Easyjet were in fact the first airline to open a base when the airport was re-positioning itself as a passenger airport around 2008? I remember flying from the newly opened terminal to Barcelona around that time.

The Accor offer appears to be showing more extensively as I’ve just re-booked a Vietnam booking for the summer and the 25% is showing.
