Conrad New York Midtown hotel leaves Hilton to join Marriott

As we reported back in April, the Conrad New York Midtown hotel had been telling guests that it was leaving Hilton on 4th June.

This is the hotel which was built as The London NYC, a property with a troubled history. It opened as an unbranded ‘all suite’ hotel at entirely the wrong point in the economic cycle.  Readers with long memories may remember that Gordon Ramsay ran the restaurant and it gained two Michelin stars within a year of its 2006 launch.  There was also a branch of Maze at one point as well as a high profile bar.

Conrad New York Midtown hotel leaves Hilton to join Marriott

In 2017 it became a Hilton.  It became the sister hotel of the Conrad in Battery Park – which is also ‘all suite’, here’s my 2017 review – which was rebranded Conrad New York Downtown.

The hotel is located on West 54th Street. For comparison, the southern boundary of Central Park is West 59th.

The hotel has now popped up as a Marriott Bonvoy property.

It has the clunky name of The Luxury Collection Hotel Manhattan Midtown. Click here for the website.

If this name sticks then it may well be the first hotel in The Luxury Collection to actually use that phrase as its name. Interestingly there is no existing hotel in The Luxury Collection in New York.

It’s not quite clear why the Conrad brand has not worked here. With the Waldorf Astoria due to re-open within a year, it would be losing its position as the (joint) best Hilton option in New York City, but I doubt that switching to The Luxury Collection – in a city full of Marriott brands – will make a big difference.

It can at least now collect the rip-off ‘resort fee’ on redemptions which is something that Hilton Honors does not allow …..
