Virgin Atlantic drops Shanghai flights, its last East Asian destination

Whilst no announcement has been made, Virgin Atlantic appears to be dropping its daily flight to Shanghai.

The flight has been removed from the schedule from 26th October, which is the last day of the summer flying season.

Shanghai is the only Virgin Atlantic route to China and indeed the only remaining route to East Asia.

Virgin Atlantic to drop flights to Shanghai

Virgin Atlantic has flown to Shanghai for over 20 years, so this is not the cancellation of a route being run as a trial. However, with Tokyo and Hong Kong dropped in recent years, it was beginning to look like an outlier.

The logic for dropping it is there, I accept. At 13-14 hours each way, due to the diversion for flying around Russian airspace, the same aircraft could do two runs to New York or Boston in the time taken for one return to Shanghai. No doubt we will see Virgin Atlantic launch yet another new route to the USA in the next few weeks.

It is well publicised that Chinese tourism has not yet returned en masse post pandemic. Chinese tourism to the UK has also been disproportionately hit by the removal of VAT reclamation on luxury goods (indeed, all goods) for tourists.

For those Chinese who do still choose to visit the UK, flight times are shorter on Chinese carriers which are still flying over Russia.

What does this mean for the new Seoul route?

Looking eastwards, Delhi is now, surprisingly, the furthest east you can fly on Virgin Atlantic.

The airline is still committed to launching flights to Seoul as soon as the Korean Air and Asiana merger is approved.

This route is likely to go ahead. Virgin Atlantic is being given extra slots at Heathrow specifically to fly to Seoul and Korean may have committed to purchase a minimum number of seats each day as part of its codeshare agreement.

The merger can only go ahead if another airline agrees to fly long-haul between the UK and Seoul so you can be fairly certain that it will happen, one way or another.

    I am in the same situation, but booked via Amex for April 25, with onward flights to Tokyo.
    The flights are still showing as confirmed on their system, so they are checking with Virgin. If anyone has any more news updates would be good.

    I have a return reward booking in J with VS LHR-PVG in Feb. I understand the fact it was booked with points doesn’t matter and I need ignore the refund email to wait a few days to then push for rerouting. However I booked mine with an upgrade voucher. Given this meant I paid the points for PE but was booked in J – can anyone advise me what “equivalent transport conditions” I would be entitled to please?

      And you’ll earn a pile of points back because you’ll be booked into a cash ticket on your new airline.

    Called Virgin this morning (19 July) and spoke with great customer representative that gave me re-routing option (choice of British Airways or SAS).

    Just spoke to them, initially all seemed fine and would re-route onto BA. Then they called back and said “as it’s a rewards booking, the only option is a refund of points plus fees and taxes”. I was under the impression that the booking method wouldn’t matter, could anyone with better knowledge comment on this?

      I had a points booking too and no problem rebooking on BA in business. Stay strong and don’t accept refund offer.

    Just called the CS, they said there were two policies. One for cash ticket, one for reward ticket. They do not offer the option for re-route through other airlines for reward ticket. The three options are 1) refund 2) fly before Oct date 3) fly to other Virgin destination. Is that correct that they can have different policies for cash and reward tickets? Thanks

      No, they are breaking the law. There is no difference in law regarding your rights between cash or reward tickets. Push back.

        I did insist on the call. But they also insisted it’s not an option. The agent said she was reading out the policy the company internally circulated yesterday. Should I wait for a few days to call back? Any reference I can quote for me to push back again? Thanks for the advice!

          I have an upper class points booking with virgin in Jan 2025. Just called and the agent offered the British airway flight on the same day, she said she has sent the details to ticketing and I will receive confirmation within 24-72 hours.

            I have the upper class points booking for December. I booked the tickets during their sales 40% off. Not sure if this makes things differently.

            I phoned the CS again, the same response. They said ‘because we have given you more than 2 weeks notice, there is no option to re-route you through other airline according to Virgin policy.’

    We’re booked to fly using points in December. We have other outbound/return flights (not with Virgin) from Shanghai on our dates. This is what I was told earlier: –

    I have confirmed with our help desk that for Reward bookings, the only options would be to re-route on Virgin Atlantic Reward flights, to amend the date on the same route free of charge or to cancel and refund. *I’m afraid there are no re-protection options for Reward bookings on the same route and dates.*

    – Same question as Tao, is it worth raising with customer care or waiting till after their system updates over the weekend?
