TODAY’S THE DAY: ‘Qsuite Next Gen’ launches today, and we’re there

Qatar Airways launched its Qsuite business class seat at the ITB Berlin travel show in February 2017.

We were there for that, and it was genuinely a revolution in business class seating.

Designed to take advantage of the wider fuselage of the Boeing 777, it was the first mainstream ‘seat with a door’.

It went further though.

Qsuite aimed to cater for families and couples as well as individual travellers, giving as much or as little privacy as desired.

If a family of four or a group was travelling together the wall between the seats could be opened, with the tables creating a dining area for four:

For a couple travelling together, the two beds formed a double bed:

Today, at the Farnborough International Airshow, Qatar Airways is launching the next generation of Qsuite.

We know nothing about it. I’ve not spoken to a single Qatar Airways employee who will admit to having seen it.

All we know from the invitation is:

“Those seeking to experience the Qsuite Next Gen can expect: Further advancements in comfort, collaborative and social design elements and passenger dining experiences.”

The official launch is at noon.

During the afternoon, HfP will get a private tour and demonstration of the new seat.

Tomorrow morning, I am at a breakfast with the new Qatar Airways CEO, Engr. Badr Mohammed Al-Meer. Rhys and I are also sitting down with the Chief Commercial Officer of Qatar Airways for an exclusive 1-2-1 chat (well, 2-2-1!).

We’ll get some images onto our social platforms as soon as we can, and get a full article up later today or by tomorrow morning. Is there really much more that can be done with a business class seat? We will see.

Hope that Rob and Rhys are drier than I am, having wandered the static park and an abortive attempt to learn about ‘Qverse’ at the impressive and smelly Qatar area!

  • Timmy says:

Does anyone have any info on what sort of devaluation we are looking at for avios on QR. Rather foolishly I decided on first booking tickets to Argentina on Iberia then worrying about the QR flights

  • Paul says:

Nice improvements, but was it hyped up to be more?

    • Rob says:

Not sure you can do more. CEO was just saying how disappointed he is that the rest of the industry has made no progress in catching up since 2017.

      • meta says:

Well, Japanese airlines have caught up way before and seats are far superior than current QSuite.

      *mood lighting in suite”

One of BJ’s wishlists come true! 😉

      • BJ says:

Good to hear, I really dislike that cabin crew have so much control of my seat environment on almost all airlines 🙂

    • Paul says:

Great idea but my wife was not so complimentary. She loves the privacy and not having to look at me over dinner. She’d much prefer to watch a movie!!

      • Alan says:

I don’t get why they think you need to turn off the TV to talk to somebody. I mean modern day a conversation with the kids could be them ‘wayching’ tv with their eyes in their phone but still talking to you!

        • David says:

If you think that’s a conversation, you need to up your parenting game.

  • sturgeon says:

Where are the comments about bad news coming and why the secrecy? Is this just another expected valuation? The reward seats look too cheap vs most competitors now anyway. Obviously a massive shame but this is happening everywhere. Or they’re going to increase the fees to insane amounts.

    • chris w says:

I could see QSuite redemptions being restricted to Qatars own Privilege Club and 1:1 transfers becoming one-way only.

    • ChrisGVA says:

Well I book Singapore airlines (of Eva Air) in business with 80€ of taxes & 71K Miles & More, from europe to asia (not starting from LHR).
So no the actual QR price is not different than some (taxes are even higher on QR)

  • executiveclubber says:

The new couple seats by the windows look nice. We’d go for those for sure!

    • Duncan says:

CW minus the step-over, or the ability to talk to the other person?

    • Tom says:

Yes, personally I’m not super happy about this change being selfish. I often find all the window seats are already taken in QSuites booking several weeks in advance on LHR-DOH (completely stupid when your last minute high fare passengers can’t get a window seat), encouraging couples to move to the windows as well from the center pairs is not a step forward to me.

      • Rob says:

I haven’t seen a seat map yet. It’s not clear if there will only be a couple of pairs like this or if the whole cabin will be 50% forward, 50% rear facing.

At the moment, Qatar tends to block out the quads until close to departure unless you have booked 4 seats. The same could happen here with solo travellers not allowed to book one of the seats.

        • Tom says:

This is my point. I doubt QR would do that since that would be madness without a further change to seat selection policy (start charging like BA?), by the way, basically meaning solo travellers aren’t able to select a seat in advance since the entire centre section of the cabin is already blocked to them in favour of groups.

          • Andrew says:

They charge already on some business fares, I think “lite” and “classic”.

  • Maples says:

Seen a video about it and the doors are high AF when you compare to BA’s suites. Window suites also look more spacious.

    • Rob says:

Leg room, seat width and suite width are all bigger vs old Qsuite.

  • Joshua says:

Same day as massive industry profits warning and O’Leary suggesting Atlantic in trouble too. Seems like Qatar might be having to spend more on the next BA bail out
